| Gangyal gun factory workers on indefinite strike to protest 'exploitation' | | |  Arun Singh

Jammu, May 18: International Labours Day is celebrated across the globe by workers, but Gangyal gun factory owners denied permission to organize any function and hoist flag by workers.
Hundreds of gun factory workers have been observing strike for the last five days, demanding among other things that they should be allowed to hoist flag at their respective establishments.
The agitation began when employees of around 15 gun factories at Ashok Nagar tried to unfurl the flag on May 1 on the occasion of Labour Day at their respective factories but their attempt was foiled by the owners of these factories.
"In order to observe the Labour Day we hoisted flags at our working places on May 1, but irritated over our act, the managements removed the flags, saying 'you cannot do this as there has been no tradition in the past,' and gave excuse that premises is the private property and is against the rule," said HD Bhomi, president of the workers.
He said they again made an attempt to hoist the flag but to no avail. "Seeing the rude attitude of the owners, we went to the police station Gandhi Nagar to lodge a complaint. Later police intervened and facilitated a compromise, as owners agreed to our demand of hoisting flags. But when we reached the factories, the owners refused to abide by the agreement and even kept our flags with them and out rightly refused to return it," Bhomi said.
"After seeing this adamant attitude of the owners, we unanimously decided to go on strike. We are already being exploited and victimized at the hands of owners for a long time. Now we have decided to launch full-fledged agitation against them," said another worker.
"Now we want that our other long pending demands should be fulfilled. The fist and forest demand is that we should be employed on monthly salary basis. Presently we are working on contract basis which is not in our favour as we get work occasionally and most of the time we have to remain without job and we have to face hardships," the workers said.
"We had given an ultimatum till May 13 to the owners to concede to our demands, but they did not agree and compelled us to take go on strike," said Bhomi.
When contacted, Assistant Labour Commissioner Jammu, Ashok Choudhary said, "We have taken the cognizance of the matter and are trying to resolve the issue. We visited the agitation spot two times and tried to understand their viewpoint and we have also talked to the owners. We are hopeful that the issue will be resolved at the earliest." |
