Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 18: Things are not moving in the right direction for the BJP in Jammu province. On May 16, many organizations, including the Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association (JKHCBA), lambasted the BJP. Almost all of them charged the BJP with selling out the Jammu's legitimate rights and interests to remain in power in the state and some of them asked the BJP ministers to "resign" from the government saying they had no "moral right" to stay in the government after its poor performance in the government and outside.
"The BJP ministers and MLAs have stabbed Jammu from the back. They have surrendered everything to Kashmir. They have caused an affront to its self-respect," they had said, adding that the patience of Jammu was coming to an end and that they will achieve what was its legitimate due share in the polity as part and parcel of the state. More significantly, they had attacked the BJP and the BJP-led NDA Government more than the PDP. They had accused the Union Government of betraying Jammu. "They are just incompetent to safeguard the interests of Jammu," they had said, and added that "the manner in which the BJP handled the issues of AIIMS and artificial lake have proved that Jammu was not in the right hand".
The situation in Jammu is becoming more and more difficult for the BJP with each passing day. Media is playing an important role in presenting the true picture of facts and exposing the BJP's controversial policies. It is more than clear now. It was on Sunday that not one but two political groups went several steps further and asked the BJP to come out of the government, as it had failed to protect the interests of the people of Jammu province. The Shiv Sena, an ally of the BJP at the Centre and in Maharashtra, in particular asked the BJP to come out of the government. That the Shiv Sena took such a stand was an indication that there were certain issues over which the stand of the BJP and the Shiv Sena are contradictory. The Shiv Sena, which on Sunday asked the BJP to come out of the government, has been also opposing the BJP's policy towards Pakistan, Kashmir and Kashmiri separatists and not supporting the BJP's controversial Land Acquisition Bill, saying it is not in the interest of farmers. The Shiv Sena is also not for the holding of cricket matches with Pakistan in India or outside, saying that Pakistan is a rogue state and talks and cricket diplomacy could not go hand in hand.
The party high command is feeling the heat and it became clear on Sunday when the BJP national president Amit Shah held a four-hour-long meeting with party leaders, both from the state and the centre, to take stock of the prevailing situation in the state in general and Jammu region in particular, but nothing came out of it in practical terms. What transpired during the meeting had no meaning for the people of Jammu region, as no announcement was made that the AIIMS will be established in Jammu and the BJP will end discrimination with Jammu and oppose pro-separatist policies.
