SRINAGAR, June 22: In a major embarrassment for National Conference, two party leaders on Saturday got into a fistfight in the presence of Provincial President during a convention in South Kashmir's Shopian district.
A video that has emerged on social media shows two NC leaders, former member of legislative council Advocate Showket Ganie and Advocate Ehsan-ul-Haq, fighting with each other, as party Provincial President Nasir Aslam Wani, State Secretary Sakeena Itoo, South Kashmir Zone President Dr Bashir Ahmad Veeri and other leaders try to pacify them.
Verbal brawl broke out when Showket Ganie, who also heads NC in Shopian, objected to the presence of Ehsan-ul-Haq on the stage.
In the video, Ganie can be heard asking Ehsan-ul-Haq to leave the stage. "Stand up. I will not allow you to sit here," Ganie can be heard telling Ehsan-ul-Haq in presence of senior leaders while the supporters of Ganie were raising slogans in favour of NC.
Party workers and supporters of Ganie also rebuked senior leaders when they intervened and tried to pacify them, eyewitness told Early Times. Workers alleged that the party leadership was taking decisions without taking them into confidence. "We don't need any confusion any Wachi constituency this time," they said.
They alleged that Ehsan-ul-Haq was propagating that party has decided to field him from Wachi Assembly segment in the upcoming assembly elections.
Sources privy to the development told Early Times that Ehsan-ul-Haq, who had unsuccessfully contested previous election on a People's Conference ticket, had joined NC three months ago in presence of party vice president Omar Abdullah.
They claimed that party leaders feel that the new entrant was parachuted into the party by the top leadership unnecessarily and without consulting the gross root level workers.
"Definitely, it (fistfight) caused huge embarrassment for the party leadership at venue. This shouldn't have happened at first place and these developments always spoil the chances of victory of a candidate," pleading anonymity, a NC leader said.
He said that the incident must serve as an eye opener for the party leadership and they must stop parachuting leaders into party.
Provincial President Nasir Aslam Wani later told media that the two leaders had some personal as well as ideological issues and differences.
