Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 4: The Jammu and Kashmir Police today was able to solve a 12-year old case of killings of seven people including four village defence committee (VDC) members at Chakka Galiote in Udhampur district and arrested four accused.
This is considered to be the major breakthrough by the Udhampur police in which three former top militants among four people were involved in hatching the conspiracy to kill these seven people on November 30, 2001.
The operation was undertaken by additional superintendent of police Udhampur Benam Tosh in direct supervision of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jammu Dilbag Singh, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police Udhampur Jagjit Singh and SSP Udhampur Ashkoor Wani.
These four people arrested by police include Farooq Ahmed alias Nasir, son of Abdul Rehman Beig, a resident of Salbala Gool, tehsil and district Ramban, Manzoor Ahmed alias Furqan, son of Ghulam Muha-mmad Nayak, a resident of Dalwa Gool, tehsil and district Ramban, Abdul Latif alias Fayaz, son of Ghulam Nabi Sohil, a resident of Chhachhwa Gool, tehsil and district Ramban and Mohammad Din son of Fazal Din Mir, a resident of Sedua Tangar, tehsil and district Ramban.
The arrested surrendered militants have remained top ranking commanders of Hizbul Mujahiddeen and were operating in Gool area of Ramban district. While Farooq Ahmed had been BN commander of HM under code 44, Manzoor Ahmed remained district operator of HM before his surrender; the third arrested former militant Abdul Latif cousin of Mohammad Hussain, alias Showkat Patwari then group commander of HM, who is still absconding.
Preliminary interrogation confirmed that the other top ranking HM militants of Gool areas like Iqbal alias Aman-ulla (then district commander who later became divisional commander of HM), Billu Gujjar (BN commander of HM) Muhammad Hussain (Group Commander of HM), Nadeem, Bilal, Shahid Lata Peer, Saddar Din, Gazi and Kari were also involved in the conspiracy and killing of these seven people
On November 30,.2001, 12 militants in army and police uniforms disguising themselves as Sawalakote security personnel appeared at Chakka Galiote at about 4.30 PM and called VDC members alongwith weapons saying that they would be recruited. Thereafter, militants asked the VDC members to deposit their weapons with their senior officer and lineup and shot them dead along with three civilians including two Gujjar youth and decamped with four rifles. On receiving the information, the then MoS Home Khalid Najeeb Suhrawardy, the then DGP A.K. Suri and the then IGP Jammu Zone P.L. Gupta visited the spot by chopper.
A case under FIR No. 26/2001 U/S 302/396/364/170/153/124/RPC, 3 (II) POTO was registered at P/S Panchari and investigation started and all the legal formalities including postmortem was conducted.
As no clue could be struck, the case was closed as un-traced in 2002 and closure report was submitted to the court in 2005. On the condition that whenever clue struck the case would be reopened.
Now, when police got a clue, the case was reopened and investigation resumed by the additional SP Udhampur Benam Tosh assisted by a team of investigators and arrested four accused.
Police is expecting more arrests in future. All the accused have been remanded to police custody for seven days and investigation is going on.
