‘Dire need to sensitize youth on significance in poll process’

JAMMU, Apr 5 : "There is a dire need to make strenuous efforts to sensitize the youth about the significance of their participation in the voting process in view of the prevailing trend of degeneration of moral and social values. This would help in making the youth realize that they shall have to play a pivotal role in bringing a social change that people have been aspiring for since decades." These views were expressed by the speakers in a seminar organized by Dainik Jagran, India's most read Newspaper, here today. President of Dogri Sanstha Prof. Lalit Magotra was Chief Guest while the programme was presided over by former secretary of J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages and a personality of various hues, Ramesh Mehta. Prof. RK Rampal HoD, Environmental Sciences, University of Jammu was the guest of honour. The seminar was organized as a part of mission" Hum Jage, Jantantra aage" being carried out by Dainik Jagran in all its footprints area. The topic of the seminar was "Kaise Behtar Ho Dunia Ka Sabse Bada Loktantra?" In addition to the activities done in Jan Jagran, Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Shantmanu released a book on "Discourses on Democracy." This book contains viewpoint from political leaders, analysts, members of media and citizen on public policy related to democracy. Content of this book is being generated from Jagran Forum held by Jagran foundation earlier. In his welcome address, Abhimanyu Sharma General Manager & Editor (J&K) of Dainik Jagran gave details of the Jan Jagran campaign being carried out since March 20. He said during this campaign various programmes to make the voters aware of values of democratic process were organized. In this regard penal discussions on challenges facing democracy were organized. He said that the main thrust of Jan Jagran campaign was to invite people to create their own manifesto for future Government in Centre. The campaign was well received by the readers, people who participated by filling in their own manifesto. Besides key members of the society including doctors, lawyers, academicians, large number of youth, women and other sections of the society created their manifesto and handed over to Dainik Jagran, who will soon be releasing the findings of people's manifesto. On the occasion, Prof Lalit Magotra, while expressing his views regarding to make a better largest democracy of the world said, awareness and sensitization are the two means only which can help to improve the democratic setup of the country. He said that this feeling should come from everyone's innerside. He lauded the role of Dainik Jagran to ensure the direct participation of the people in democracy by giving them a chance to create their own manifesto. Ramesh Mehta expressed his distress over the present scenario of lawlessness, corruption, unemployment, emerging of separatist and extremist forces which have weakened the world. He said that every body is concerned about his vested interests. He said that for better democracy, we need to rise above the personal vested interests. This should be part of political parties leaders behavior too. Speaking on the occasion Prof. RK Rampal, HoD, Environmental Sciences, said that voting should be made compulsory for every person so that the trend of fake voting should be curtailed. He exhorted youth to exercise their franchise. He said those avoid casting their vote should be declared defaulter. Bharti Sharma, a Research Scholar from Environmental Sciences laid stress that youth can only bring change in the system and they should come forward to strengthen the democratic setup. Besides Prof. Pankaj Srivastav, Dean students welfare, Prof. Anil Raina, Prof. Yashpal, Madan Mohan Sharma, Ex, Dy Commandent, CRPF and a large number of Research scholars were also present in the seminar. Vote of thanks was presented by Rohit Jandial. The programme was ably conducted by Vijay Atri, Ex-Assistant Dean Cultural Affairs, University of Jammu.
