Srinagar, Apr 10: Hundreds of people from South Kashmir' Anantnag district on Thursday staged a protest and blocked trains over overcrowding. The protestors halted passenger train near Bijbehara and raised slogans against rail authorities. Eyewitnesses said the protestors blocked railway track for four hours due to which passengers faced great inconvenience.
"Overloading in trains has become the order of the day and it has become difficult for passengers especially female travellers to travel in train. We demand that either more bogies to be added to the train or another train service should be started," a protester Nazir Ahmed said.
A railway official said that they would look into the demand of the people and if possible more bogies would be added to the train. He said that the process will time and the cannot be done within days. Locals while registering their protest demonstrations stated that they have at several times submitted before the authorities that the space inside the train must be extended so that the passengers could not face hardships while travelling to their respective locations. Protestors accused that the train services were stated in valley with much hype but at the end of the day, the tall claims of the authorities turned out to be a mere 'hoax'. People also started that since the train was started from south Kashmir's Banihal area, the capacity has not been increased, though several routes have been added. Protestors stated that the passengers have to face much hardships due to the huge rush of trains and that the space in the train must be extended at an earliest.
Later, the police and district administration reached the spot and tried to pacify the mob. It was assured to the protestors that the matter will be taken to the railway authorities.
