Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 10: In what could be termed as major shift, Muslim voters on Jammu-Poonch Lok Sabha seat voted in huge numbers both for BJP and against BJP's Prime Ministerial nominee Narendra Modi.
Mood was enthusiastic as young Muslim ladies queued up to vote. Apart from making a mention of BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, the first timer Muslim ladies as well as youngsters talked about development, peace, progress and prosperity as essential needs of vibrant J&K. Regarding Modi, their opinion was divided but they all agreed that Modi has made development and progress in Gujarat.
A young Muslim voter in Gujjarnagar on being asked said "This is for the first time I have voted. I have voted for BJP. I voted for one simple reason that India deserves change. A decisive and strong leader is the need of hour. A remote controlled leader would be of no good for the country." On being asked about Narinder Modi, he said "I know, people talk of 2002 communal riots in Gujarat but what about those riots which took place prior to BJP's emergence at the national level."
"How many people have been held accountable and how many have been put behind the bars? I am sure, the reply would be negative," added the Youngman who said that he is working in a multinational company. Early Times found ample instances of Muslim youngsters talking of having voted for BJP despite pressure from the parents and relatives to vote for Congress. "It is our choice. Let us give Modi a chance to apologise by deeds for 2002 Gujarat riots. We are sure, he would not disappoint us," said a young Muslim voter in Janipur.
A female who had voted for Congress reasoned aversion with communal forces for having voted for Congress. "I hate Bandh and strike politics of BJP. They spread hatred which brings them votes. I know Congress is corrupt but communalism is a chronic ailment," added the female.
He did agree that Congress is facing leadership crisis at the national level while BJP has a leader leading the campaign from the front across the country. "It is their internal issue. I have performed my duty. Now, it is for Congress to see who leads them in future," added the female. An aged Lady from Talab Khatikan on being asked about the vote said "This time, I voted for PDP. I hate both Congress and BJP."
A Muslim youngman who runs a business in Jammu said that he voted for Congress. "I voted for Congress since my relatives are in this party. My wife voted for BJP. We had decided to vote for these two parties," added the youngman. In an interesting incident, a Congress leader's wife claimed that she voted for BJP. "My vote is for BJP's PM nominee Narinder Modi. My husband is Congress leader but I told him not to force me to vote for Congress this time," said the lady while talking to Early Times.
Among the voters included a family whose head is an active member of All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC). He had come to vote alongwith entire family. On being asked, his reply was "There is no option but democracy if we have to keep communal and fascist forces at bay. Azadi can wait but development and progress cannot. I am voting not as member of APHC but as a common Muslim of India."
On being asked about the vote, he said "I have voted for Congress candidate. Communal forces are a danger for this country." A staunch Jamaat-e-Islami man was also seen searching his name in the voter list. Whether for or against the BJP's Prime Ministerial nominee, Early Times found young Muslim voters both male and female enthusiastic about participating in the democratic process and seeking change.
