Kishtwar Sept 30: After remaining trapped in heavy vehicular jam on Jammu-Kishtwar National Highway for more than 30 hours people reached Kishtwar today afternoon. Similar was the case with the vehicles traveling on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway where the passenger vehicles and other commercial vehicles remain trapped for over 40 hours.
While talking to "Early Times", the people said that mismanagement, bad roads and movement of nomadic families with their livestocks was the reason for massive jam on both the National Highways. They said that at many places the road is single lane, particularly between Patnitop and Udhampur and Between Ramban and Qaziqund.
The said that several pit holes were developed on road stretch from Patnitop and Udhampur causing lot of inconvenience. They said that similarly the single road stretch was available between Batote and Qaziqund area.
They said that government has failed to restrict the movement of nomadic families and their livestocks to pave way for the smooth traffic at the time when hundreds of trucks loaded with relief material were on its way. They said that hundreds of trucks loaded with relief material and fruit supply are stranded on Jammu-Srinagar Highway since last several days.
They said that the traffic jam was cleared only after night long operation personally supervised by SSP National Highways Haseeb Mughal. They said that many drivers were also responsible for the traffic jam as they tried to rush in, thus violating traffic rules by choosing wrong side.
They said that no toilet facility or food was available for the passengers and many among them spent the whole night with empty stomach.
When contacted SSP National Highways Haseeb Mughal said that there are many factors and urged upon the people to follow the traffic rules.
In a question regarding allowing movement of nomadic families along with their livestock, Mughal said that the decision is beyond his jurisdiction and is to be decided by the top government officials.
He said that traffic officials are doing their duties with dedication and beyond the available resources. He also blamed poor road and delay in clearing the full road stretch at many places along the National Highways.
He said that once the road stretch at Ramsu get cleared, the traffic will start functioning smoothly. He said that traffic authorities are clearing the trucks with relief material for valley on priority. He said that department has taken certain decision with regard to smooth functioning of traffic for next few days. He hope that people will follow the directions issued from the traffic department from time to time.
