Farooq campaigns from a distance of 3802 miles
11/17/2014 11:53:45 PM

What the National Conference
president,Dr Farooq Abdullah could
not have done by being in the forefront of the party's poll campaign he seems to have done it from London where the ailing leader has been receiving treatment for the last three months or so. It needs to be appreciated that even from the hospital bed in London Farooq Abdullah has not lost sight of various pre-poll developments in Jammu and Kashmir. Fearing that the BJP led NDA Government may work for the abrogation of Article 370,that grants special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir,he has voiced his resentment over the plan. Well at the moment the BJP is a divided house because all the candidates fielded by it from the Kashmir valley are opposed to any plan on repealing Article 370.
One BJP candidate from Amirakadal,Hina Bhat, has gone to the extent of telling people that she would be the first woman to take a gun in her hands if Article 370 was tampered with. Finding that the BJP could upset the applecart of the National Conference from NC's region of influence which is Kashmir valley,Farooq Abdullah has touched the issue pertaining to Article 370.This he has done to convey to the voters in Kashmir that his party will have no alliance with the BJP led by Modi right from London he has conveyed to people in Kashmir that his bigger worry " is the known agenda of the BJP to abrogate Article 370 of the Constitution which gives the state a special status for which commitments were given by Mahatma Gandhi and by the Government of India. Rightly or wrongly Farooq Abdullah believes that the BJP will do anything to achieve its objectives. They will polarise this sensitive state as they have done in the rest of the country. They will strike deals with anyone. In this context he had in mind Sajjad Lone's meeting with Modi in New Delhi. Warning of serious implications of abrogation of Art 370, he has said, "there would be massive unrest in younger minds and we will never achieve peace."
About Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Farooq Abdullah has said, "I do not know whether he can go against the dictates of RSS on Art 370. It will be a great day for the entire nation when he understands the heartbeats of the people of Jammu and Kashmir."
As far as Modi is concerned he has never, after t aking over the Prime Ministership of India, said that his Government would initiate steps for repealing Article 370. Even while campaigning for the Lok Sabha poll in Jammu, where majority of people are in favour of abrogation of Article 370,he favoured a debate on the issue of grant of special status to the state and find out if Article 370 has benefitted people of Jammu and Kashmir or not. If it is established that the special status has given a number of benefits to the people no attempt would be made at abrogating this constitutional provision. However, the Union Home Minister,Rajnath Singh, too has voiced his views on the matter which are similar to the one expressed by Modi. Rajnath Singh has stated that in case it was found that Article 370 has not benefitted people,it has not given jobs to the educated youth in the state and it has increased backwardness of the state it has to be repealed. Farooq Abdullah knows it still he took time to voice his feelings on the issue which was done to woo voters in the Kashmir valley which has 46 seats. Again credit needs to be given to Farooq Abdullah for trying to hit hard the political rivals of the NC. Knowing that the PDP enjoys better chances in the Valley he has repeated his old charge that the PDP has been the child of the BJP. And will people in Kashmir believe that the BJP under Atal Behari Vajpayee has been different than the BJP under Modi? Possibly people may be divided on the issue as after his recent trips to foreign lands Modi, who had been almost a political outcast for 10 years, has emerged as a rock star because of his dynamic and pragmatic political approach to various issues, especially to the issue of terrorism and black money.Possibly Farooq Abdullah wishes to remove an impression, that has surfaced in Kashmir, indicating a post-poll tie-up between the NC and the BJP.
