In JK, 5 Ex-MPs, dozen sitting legislators have changed sides

SRINAGAR, Nov 17: The Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir have triggered defections in four major political parties with five ex-MPs and over a dozen sitting and former legislators changing sides.
The ruling National Conference, its ally Congress, saffron party BJP and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have all been hit by defections before and after the election bugglewas sounded by Election Commission.
The latest to defect is ruling National Conference (NC's) senior leader and former MP, Mehboob Beg. Beg, a doctor, was given NC mandate from Anantnag constituency in South Kashmir district but has decided to quit the party and not to contest Assembly elections.
He said he will launch door-to-door campaign for opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and seek votes for him and his party.
He is son of MirzaAfzal Beg, a close confidante of former J&K Chief Minister Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah who played key role in signing of 1974 accord between Sheikh and Indira Gandhi.
Beg's loss is a big jolt for NC as he was one of the party's senior leader and active in politics for over 30 years.
Earlier, in August, another former MP of NC, Abdul RasheedShaheen had quit the party and joined Awami National Conference (ANC) led by Khalida Shah, sister of Farooq Abdullah.
Another former MP of NC, ex-minister and Gujjar leader Chaudhary Talib Hussain had quit party in August this year and joined BJP. Senior Congress leader, former MP and former Deputy Chief Minister of J&K, Mangat Ram Sharma also quit the party last month and joined opposition PDP.
Congress's two-time MP Lal Singh also quit the party in August this year and joined BJP. He will be contesting Assembly elections from his home constituency in Jammu province on the saffron party ticket.
NC's sitting MLC and party's senior leader, Sheikh GhulamRasool also the quit the party on November 6 and criticised Omar Abdullah for doing nothing for Abdullah family's traditional seat Ganderbal constituency, where from Omar decided not to contest in this elections.
On November 9, NC's MLC and former Minister Ajatshatru Singh son of senior Congress leader and former Sadr-e-Riyasat of J&K Karan Singh also quit the ruling party and joined BJP.
PDP's sitting MLA from Rajpora Syed Bashir has decided to contest elections as independent candidate after being denied ticket by the party. PDP has fielded former J&K Bank chairman and economic expert DrHaseebDrabu from the seat representing by Bashir in the Assembly.
BJP's sitting MLA Baldev Sharma, who was denied party ticket from Reasi seat has filed nomination papers as independent candidate. BJP's another sitting MLA, Jagdish Raj Sapolia, who was denied ticket from Basohli has joined Congress and will contest against BJP candidate from the seat he won in 2008 polls.
Another sitting BJP MLA DurgaDass has joined Jammu-based party Nationalist Panthers Party (NPP).
The saffron party's another sitting MLA Master Lal Chand has also decided to contest election as an independent candidate.
Congress party's sitting MLC and former Power Minister B R Kundal has also resigned from the party and will be contesting elections from R S Pura as an independent candidate. He had resigned as Chief Secretary of the State during GhulamNabi Azad's tenure as Chief Minister and was appointed Power Minister.
Senior BJP leader GirdhariLal, who had filed his nomination papers from Ramban seat on BJP ticket, resigned from the party and joined NC. He retired from the contest in favour of NC candidate.
Another BJP leader Kabla Singh, who was denied party ticket from Gool-Arnas seat in Jammu, has joined the PDP.
Senior leader of Congress and former minister Thakur Puran Singh also quit the party and joined BJP after being denied ticket. He will contest from Darhal assembly seat on the saffron party's ticket.
Political observers opine that the defections may increase after conclusion of Assembly elections in the State.
