Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 17: General Officer Commanding of 16 Corps, Lt General K H Singh's recent statement that 200 militants are waiting across the border and could attack soft targets like schools has send a chilling terror down the spine of parents of the children in Jammu who are daily commuters to various schools in the region.
Though the enforcement agencies have given a strong assurance that there is no need to panic for the parents for their wards, but the fallout of Peshawar carnage which is still live in the memories of the people have turned parents skeptical to send their children to the schools.
Even various schools since then have started reporting thin attendance of the children.
Besides, some of the schools are reported to be taking the blood samples of the children so that in case of any eventuality, necessary needs could be provided on time.
The schools management is also considering putting the schools on holidays nearing the Republic day, i.e. 26th January which they are contemplating to do few days prior to the observance of the day.
Talking to Early Times, Principal Renu Gupta of Army Public School Damana said that school has been well guarded and every apparatus is in place to safeguard the security of the children coming to school. Though she denied thin attendance of the children in the school, but said that taking the extra precautionary measures, the school management that comes under the direct control of concerned GOC, is contemplating to extend some holidays prior to the 26th January.
"This is a sensitive issue, and safeguarding the students is our top priority. The management of the school is considering the grave nature of the threat and may put school on holidays for few days prior to the R-Day celebrations," she said.
Kendriya Vidalayas, which fall under the sangathan system, are quite serious over the threat perception looming large in the wake of terror call given by the militants to attack 'soft targets'.
V Santosh, principal KV No 3 too said that Vidyalyas are fully geared to safeguard their students in this crisis. He also said that he is in constant touch with the DIG concerned under whose purview the look after of the sangathan falls and is seeking his guidance to take the necessary steps.
"We are in constant touch with the higher-ups and would follow the guidelines issued by them. Yes, we are under the procedure for taking the blood samples of the students to be on the safer side in case of any untoward incident so that help could be provided on the time," said V Santosh adding that management is also considering the proposal to put schools on the holidays for the time that sees of Republic Day celebrations off peacefully.
Director General Police K Rajendra has already given assurance that there is no need to panic for the children as police is fully geared under the three-tier security system to safeguard schools in Jammu.
He has said International Border (IB) as well as LoC is under the clinical watch and high level meetings are conducted to take the timely precautionary measures to thwart any mischief.
Sources privy to Directorate Education too confirmed that the issue of putting up school holidays in this period , besides taking up the blood sample of the children too have been taken up the directorate which would be enforced within a day.
Director School Education, R A Inquilabi, however could not be contacted for his take on the issue as his mobile phone remained switched off.
Lt General K H Singh's on Thursday had said that there are inputs that terrorists from across the border might try to infiltrate into India and attack 'soft targets' like schools, religious places and other such civilian areas ahead of US President Barack Obama's visit to India on Republic Day.
Singh also said that there was co-ordination between Pakistan's intelligence service Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and the terrorists trying to infiltrate India.
