Jammu, Jan 17: Despite mesmerizing performance by Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) Amritsar in the one act play, Jammu University once again disappointed the participants and delegates who have come to participate in the 30th North Zone Youth Festival.
Extraordinary talented individuals as well as troupes produced scintillating performances, enthralling the audience who were otherwise seen complaining about the arrangements made by Jammu University for the high profile North Zone Festival. Association of Indian Universities (AIU) which choose Jammu University as the venue for the Youth festival has seemingly so far not taken note of the problems being faced by the participants.
Hush is the word. Ask the participants even after being eyewitness to their troubles and they would tell you "Sir, please don't ask any questions. We would unnecessarily be penalised by the official accompanying us." As day 3 began, the folk dance item which was slated to begin at 9.30 am started an hour late. The item did not start before a drama between the officials of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) Amritsar and the organising officials of Jammu University (JU).
GNDU had bought lights alongwith them for their one act play and got the same installed in the auditorium. None had raised any objection despite one of the officials namely Sumeet Sharma being very much in the hall. GNDU team had taken around 2 hours to erect the stands and get the lights installed for their play. During these two hours, none from the Jammu University including the ex-Natrang artists Sumeet Sharma raised any objection. The issue was raised by participating teams from the other universities of North India.
Dean Students Welfare (DSW) Prof. Pankaj Srivastva was seen yelling at the top of his voice and telling the team from GNDU to immediately remove the special lights. Objections were also raised by the AIU observer. He said that the lights cannot be used since this would amount to giving undue advantage to the team from GNDU Amritsar. But the GNDU team argued that they have qualified zonal and inter-zonal rounds where none objected to the use of lights.
The artists further said that they have been practising since the last more than 6 months with these lights and how could now AIU all of sudden raise objection and that too because Jammu University has just woken up to the fact that we have installed lights in the auditorium. They further said that had lights in the auditorium been working properly, they would not have installed their own. They further said that lights are an essential element of their act play and without lights; it would be difficult to perform.
Dean Students Welfare (DSW) was seen aggressively asking the team from GNDU to take the special lights down. Later, the GNDU team lowered the lights but refused to take them off. And when they performed, they did justify the use of special acts for performing on the stage. The GNDU goof-up was followed by the first item which was folk dance. Host again was a disappointment. A student from law school, she seemingly knew little about the job that had been assigned to him.
She spoke nothing apart from introducing the teams. She went missing at around 11.05 PM and did not return as the audience kept looking towards the stage. None seemed concerned at complete lack of coordination. University officials were busy in chit-chat in the front rows and a Professor from the law department would occasionally go upto the mike and make an energetic announcement to bring the show alive.
There was complete unanimity over the fact that university cared little to give the artists feel of having been invited to perform in a professional atmosphere where those appointed to look after culture and art knew their job well. The opening and closing of curtain which JU has been calling a trivial issue actually made the Jammu University (JU) look like an unprofessional institution which knew nothing about art and culture.
None knew where team of JU was as the host kept calling the name. It took the team more than five minutes for the team to arrive on the stage. The mesmerising performance of the teams from outside the state was belittled by the unenthusiastic crowd from Jammu University. Shri Mata Vaishno Dev University (SMVDU) which is located in the lap of Katra presented Rajasthan dance, something which has no relevance with culture of region which university claims of representing.
Despite claiming of having set high standards, SMVDU disappointed the audience. Music was on when they stopped dancing. They were completely out of sync with music being played in the background. The host knew nothing apart from announcing names of teams. Seating space meant for media had all been occupied by audience. Exactly at 1.51, host of show went missing.
Slated to start at 2.30 pm, the one act play finally started an hour late. BGBSU and SMVDU alongthwith Kashmir University had not registered for the one act play. Participants demanded that there should be warning bell. This again led to chaos with team leaders rushing to judges to seek clarification. Such a big university and they do not have a functional curtain, was what the audience was heard saying. They were further heard saying that discipline committee was nowhere to be seen and it was free for all in the auditorium.
