US warns Pakistan against terror strikes
1/21/2015 12:13:04 AM
IF Washington has dished out a warn ing to Pakistan telling it that there would be grave consequences if Pakistan based terrorists or any other agency carried out any cross border attack on India during the time President, Barack Obama, was in New Delhi it has been done with a definite purpose because the American Government is well aware of the fact that Pakistan based terrorists carry out some sort of a strike against the Indian forces or vital Government installations during the time some dignitary is on a visit to India. And Washington does not seem to have forgotten how Pakistan-based militant groups have carried out terror attacks in India coinciding with high-profile visits from the US.It is fully aware of the incident of March 20, 2000, when 36 Sikhs were shot in Anantnag district of J-K when the then US President Bill Clinton was on a visit to India. It is in this context that the US has asked Pakistan to ensure there is no cross-border terror incident during President Barack Obama's visit to India, subtly warning of "consequences" if any such attack is traced back to the country.Pakistan and its agencies do so simply to highlight the Kashmir issue. Obama will arrive in New Delhi on January 25 on a three-day visit to the country. He will attend the Republic Day parade on January 26, the first US President to do. The US and Indian security agencies are taking extra care for Obama as he will be on an open-air platform at Rajpath for more than two hours, witnessing the parade. The US has asked Pakistan to ensure there is no cross-border terrorism or even attempts of it during Obama's trip, says sources. Pakistan has been subtly warned of the "consequences" of any terrorist attack during Obama's trip if that is traced back to their country, the sources said. The warning has been issued keeping the track record of Pakistan-based militant groups that have carried out such attacks in India coinciding with high-profile visits. On March 20, 2000, militants had shot 36 Sikhs in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, coinciding with the visit of the then US President Bill Clinton to India from the US. The US forces in Afghanistan are also keeping a close eye on the activities of the terrorist groups in the region. The US Embassy in Pakistan, too, has been alerted. What is intriguing is the way Washington has issued a warning to Pakistan against any attempt by the terrorists at organizing strikes on the border during Obama's visit to New Delhi and remains a mute spectator during the all time Pakistani troops resort to repeated ceasefire violations for pushing groups of terrorists into Jammu and Kashmir for escalating the level of subversive violence. Had Washington been serious about promoting peace in the south Asian region it should have issued warning to Islamabad telling Pakistan to stop supporting proxy war against India. It should have cautioned Pakistan of grave consequences if it did not abandon its plan of assisting militants in crossing over to Jammu and Kashmir and in carrying out terrorist strikes in any other Indian state.Well if one expects Washington to force Islamabad to stop using the soil of Pakistan for exporting terror to India one does so because the American Government claims to be in the forefront of a war against terror.Better late than never and there is still time for Washington to initiate measures which could force Pakistan to desist from sponsoring proxy war against India.
