Early Times Report

Kishtwar, Jan 20: As the deadline for filing of nomination papers for February 7, Rajya Sabha election to four seats of Jammu and Kashmir is at hand and the uncertainty over the future alliance with Bhartiya Janta Party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) the single largest party in Jammu and Kashmir has short listed the names of three party leaders to file nomination papers for three Rajya Sabha (RS) seats.
As per the sources, PDP finalize the names of leading plastic surgeon and party Spokesperson Dr. Sameer Koul, former Minister Peer Mohammad Hussain and Bashir Mir of Kangan for the three Rajya Sabha seats.
The party sources revealed that the names of three party leaders who will contest scheduled Rajya Sabha elections on behalf of PDP was decided during a high level party meeting attended by the patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, party President Mehbooba Mufti, senior leader and MP Muzafar Hussain Beigh and several other top leaders of the party a few days ago.
"The first preference of votes will go into the favour of Dr Sameer Koul and Peer Mohammad Hussain, while the 2nd preference of votes will be given to Bashir Mir whose winning chances is 50:50 in case Congress and National Conference with the help of few independents will reach an agreement and vote jointly for the single candidate, party sources said.
They added that PDP is optimistic and is hopeful of winning all the three seats of Rajya Sabha with the help of independents from the Srinagar, while the fourth seat is assured for the BJP which had 25 MLAs as compared to 28 of PDP followed by NC at 15 and Congress with 12 in its kitty while 7 others (independents) are likely to play a significant role in these polls.
It is pertinent to mention that BJP too has short listed the name of former state President Shamsher Singh Manhas for the one assured Rajya seat. Meantime keeping in view of cross voting scandals in past, Election Commission of India has decided to go for 'open ballot' voting system.
