BUDGAM, Jan 20: Beerwah area in this Central Kashmir district is known for fresh water but despite this fact the Kandoora village of this area, is without drinking water. It is "nearer the church, farther the God" like situation for the villagers as they have been unnecessarily deprived of this basic amenity. The people of the village blame the Public Health Engineering department of neglecting the village as a result of which they suffer a lot on account of non-availability of potable water. The people of the village accuse the department of unnecessary delay despite the fact that the water supply scheme in the village has been completed.
"The areas like our village always fail to catch the attention of the authorities and our sufferings usually go unnoticed. We had hoped that the water supply scheme, which has been completed would be dedicated to the people of the area but unfortunately it wasn't to be," said the villagers.
These villagers went on saying that they have been the victim of the official apathy and the result is that the women suffer immensely during the harsh winter and they have to fetch the water from a considerable distance. There is a high risk of women getting injured since they have to come out of their houses to fetch water even in the slippery conditions, added these villagers.
Chief Engineer, Public Health Engineering (PHE) department Ahmad MuzaffarLankar said the water supply scheme is complete and the filtration plant and the reservoir are also completed to be dedicated to the village. He said all these utilities would be dedicated to the villagers within 10 days. The Chief Engineer said that the department wanted to throw the scheme open but the villagers as according to him, insisted that let the distribution be completed first which is hoped to get over within a time of 10 days.
Meanwhile, the residents of Lar Tehsil of Ganderbal district have alleged that they are being forced to drink dirty water because some of the 'insane' people have made toilets on the banks of the Lar canal and on the Dab canal, which are the source of drinking water for a vast area. "Perhaps this serious issue hasn't come in the notice of the PHE authorities and as a matter of fact people of many areas are compelled to drink the water, dirty though. Nothing has been done so far to dismantle the toilets on the banks of these canals," said Shabir Ahmad from Lar.
