SRINAGAR, Jan 29: In a perfect example of lackadaisical approach Srinagar Development Authority (SDA) has in clear violation of municipal laws permitted a blue-eyed religious organization to construct (Dar-ul-uloom) religious seminary in the middle of Doodh Ganga river channel at Kaka Sarai area of old city.
Sources confirmed to Early Times that a concrete structure has been erected at around five kanals of land by choking the Doodh Ganga stream. When the issue got highlighted on social media, the so-called religious preachers overtly rejected the claims saying they have permission to construct Dar-ul-uloom claiming that they have acquired the land from SDA at the rate of Rs. 3,00,000 per kanal. "This is absolutely nonsense, first of all our religion has strictly prohibited to use public property for constructing mosques, but the situation is entirely different here as the religious institution aimed to provide Islamic education to children has been erected by means of choking the rivulet," sources said. They said that the construction is almost complete adding that no serious measures were taken so far to save Doodh Ganga stream which is on the verge of extinction. Pertinent to mention here, that the excavation work to widen Doodh Ganga stream was already stopped by the authorities that made the rivulet vulnerable for devastating floods.
According to the official documents available with Early Times, Irrigation and Flood Control Department (I&FCD) had on 3-3-2012, issued allotment letter vide order no: DB/187 for auction and raising of bunds by excavation from Doodh Ganga stream from RD 33911.18 meters to RD 36313.47 meters.
However, the authorities under tremendous pressure from some influential people left the work halfway which according to sources was one of the major reasons of devastation caused by the recent floods in the areas situated around Doodh Ganga rivulet. "The original distance across Doodh Ganga stream was around 100 feet which at present has been reduced to only 50-60 feet. It was further widened by 30 feet when the drugging work was started on one side of the stream in the year 2012, however, the work without conveying any reason was stopped by the authorities after some blue eyed people claimed that the land which is being drugged is a proprietary land," sources said.
