As authorities go in slumber, residents of summer capital continue to face frequent traffic jams | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Jan 31: Claims of the authorities that they will come over the problem of frequent traffic jams has proved to be a damp squib as the make shift shops have choked the roads not only in the Srinagar city, but in other parts of the valley too. Authorities seem to be helpless as they have not succeeded in removing even a single makeshift shop from the Srinagar roads not to talk of the ones in the rural areas. The busiest roads of the Srinagar have been occupied by the street vendors and one such road passes in front of the authorities manning traffic. "The journey between the Radio Station and the Jehangir Chowk and from Jehangir Chowk to Shalteng can be provided as an example where the makeshift shoppers have taken control of everything. It seems authorities have surrendered before these vendors as the problem of traffic jams is aggravating with the each passing day," said Abdul Hameed, a shopkeeper. Hameed was of the opinion that the things will never improve unless and until the government is going to act with the noble intentions to get the roads cleared of the makeshift shops. He lamented that as to why the government is not providing these street vendors an alternate place which will serve two purposes that their business does not suffer and at the same time it will ensure the free movement of the traffic. "It is surprising that despite being the summer capital of the state, drivers who ply their vehicles on these roads face a lot of problems more so the pedestrians. This results in the frequent but massive traffic jams in which the vehicles get stuck for hours together," said Mushtaq Ahmad, a resident of Bohri Kadal. Though the government has given the authority to the Tehsildars to get the roads cleared, but there is no such thing visible as of now because in the state of Jammu and Kashmir that the orders are on the paper only and it never turns to be practical reality. When Early Times wanted to know from a woman vendor as to why she has not shifted her makeshift shop from the road, as there are clear orders from the government in this regard, she hardly seemed to be bothered about that. She said, "Who is this Tehsildar to get my shop shifted from here and I swear that I will teach the Tehsildar a lesson of his life if ever he touches my shop". |
