Separatist camp divides further ahead of Govt formation | Malik refuses, Mirwaiz welcomes talks, Geelani mute | | Peerzada Ummer
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Feb 28: As the new government is all set to assume office, the PDP-BJP bonhomie seems to have fragmented the separatist camp with contradictory statements coming out from JKLF and Huriyat factions. It was on February 26 that the JKLF chief convened a press conference at a local hotel in Srinagar, training guns against the PDP and its patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. Yasin Malik while admitting the defeat of the separatist camp on intellectual podium also hinted to refuse any offer of talks that would be made to separatists in future by the new government. "If talks are offered to separatists during the tenure of the new government, it would be nothing than a photo opportunity. We reject such a proposal of talks," Malik said while addressing media in Srinagar on Thursday. It was on Friday, that Huriyat conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq while addressing people at the Grand mosque of Srinagar welcomed the offer of talks, if rendered to separatists. "We will welcome the offer of talks which would be aimed at the resolution of pending issues. We believe that talks are the only way forward," said the Huriyat (M) chairman, adding that separatists must be involved in the negotiations. The contradictory statements coming from the desk of the two separatist leaders has shocked many including the political pundits are of the opinion that such a trend would give upper hand to the government to function and to deliver. The 'No, No' and 'Yes, Yes' attitude of the separatists has made people to admit that something is somewhere wrong within the camp as single direction seems to have been a distant entity during the tenure of the new government in Jammu and Kashmir. "How come this approach would work in Kashmir valley when the statements of different nature are being issued by the separatists here. It will only entangle the situation but at the same time it would provide the new government maximum reasons to concentrate on its development plan," says a student of Kashmir University. People in Kashmir have also monitored the statements of these two separatists in which two opposite directions are being preached. Meanwhile, if reports are to be believed, the Huriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani is tight lipped over the formation of the new government and so far has restrained the members of his party to speak over any such issue related to BJP-PDP bonhomie. Geelani so far has preferred to stay silent over the latest happenings in the state of Jammu and Kashmir and to react at a proper time, sources told Early Times. A meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and PDP chief Mufti Mohammed Sayeed where the two leaders gave their approval for a common minimum programme (CMP) for governance. The swearing-in will be on March 1. The PDP expects the NDA government to resume dialogue process with Pakistan and Hurriyat leaders as Sayeed emphasised, after the meeting, the need to engage with Islamabad. The government, he said, must take off from where former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee left when he had extended a hand of friendship to the then Pakistan leadership. "History has given us another chance. We want to repeat history,' Mufti had said after meeting the Prime Minister. |
