Starting 'Light n Sound' program in the ruins of Basohli palaces
Shiv Kumar Padha Basohli3/21/2015 11:51:17 PM
Palaces of a town or of a city,
whether in normal or ruined con
dition, have a bonanza of information about the past, for its onward transfer to the coming generation regarding the glory of the place where situated ,its prosperity, way of living of the people ,its trade, standard of living of the people at that time , history of the place, mod of governance, justice, interests in the arts of music games or sports among the king and the masses and the aesthetic sense of the ruled and the rulers. As the remains of the palaces have been a part of the moments of the merriments and joys at the time of victories and annexations for the state and sufferings and mourning's during the defeats and human loss during the wars.
The palaces have been the witness of the hustle and bustle inside of the palaces. The musical rhythm of the 'gung roes and the vocal recitals of the court musicians still echo in the durbar hall and sheesh mahal'part of the ruins.
That is why it is said that the remains of the palaces speak more than they were in living state. They become the testimony of the time.
These ruins are like the 'Barbreek' and Sanjay of the Mahabharata who have watched the whole episode of the Kurukshetra which lasted for 18 days. It is the time when our budding generation should know about their past and feel proud of the kind of the people and the kings of those days.
The ruins are like mute spectators which can not speak but have many things which need our words and actions to relate about the past.
Basohli has been the most popular and prosper state among the 22 states of duggar .Its glory can be seen in the ruins of the palaces which still have the volumes to be spoken about it.
The French traveler Vigne who visited Basohli between 1835-39 describes Basohli and its palaces "Basohli contains a large and slovenly looking bazaar, and the place would hardly, as for as I could judge, be worth the travelers 'notice, were it not for the baronial appearance of the palace of the old Rajas, which I thought the very finest building of the kind I had seen in the east, Its square turrets open and embattled parapets, projecting windows Chinese-roofed balconies and moat like tank in front presented a general look. It reminded me of some of the most ancient red - brick structure of my own country. This palace has more grandeur and is inferior to that of Heidelberg".
The ruin of the palace stand on a plate form which is app.100 ft. from the chogan .The palace is spread over an area of app.1200sq.mts.
There are still the remains of the big halls which are understood to have been used as the meeting places of the masses during some festivals. As stated by Vigne a pond comes between the palaces and the out siders
.There is sufficient space to accommodate thousands of persons at a time.
The whole palace is visible even from the middle of the town 'chogan'.The horticulture department of the state has grown some flowers and trees which give a beautiful look to the ruins. These days Municipal committee Basohli has fixed flood lights which illuminate the old monument which make it visible even at night. No doubt the palaces and the whole town presents a scenic beauty yet it becomes the duty of the government to visualize and plan in such away so that a number of tourists from other part of the country throng in good number to see such wonderful structure of the east. It has been noticed that many dry and arid places have been developed and converted as the tourist places.
Many governments of the states converted small ponds into the lakes in order to boost their tourism. But the Basohli town which already abounds in natural and scenic beauty of 88 sq. kmts.Ranjeet sagar lake which is inviting to the countrymen to come and enjoy the water and aquatic games, the snow clad mountains surrounding the town, Pashmina industry and the Basohli Paintings for which Basohli has become a hub, and last but not the least its wonderful palaces and the forts. AS every body knows that our modern generations, though have much knowledge of the world history but they are quite ignorant about their past glory. If the light and sound program on the pattern of old fort of Delhi and mughal garden of Kashmir are started in the remains of the palaces the visitors can enjoy water sports (on the priorities), visit of the old monuments, do trekking and enjoy the sound and drama programs at one spot Basohli .There are many themes on which the scripts can be written for the light and sound program:-
" Social themes like interstate marriages with reciting and singing of folk suhags, ghodian, and sitnian etc.
" Folk songs and dances from adjoining states Himachal and Punjab.
" Dramas on the characters of Kunju and Chachlo ,stories woven on the love affairs of the heroes and heroines living on the either sides of the river Ra
" From the wars and victories between the Rajas of Basohli and Nurpur.
" From the murder of Raja Bhupat Pal by Raja Jagat Singh of Nurpur as a result of conspiracy hatched against king of Basohli Raja Bhoopat Pal in the court of Mughal king Shah jahan of Delhi in 1642.
" From the painful departure of Raja Sangram Pal, known for his extraordinary beauty, for the court of Shah Jahan in order to exhibit his beauty in the court and the Haram (Zanana). The people were panicked lest they should again loose their gentle and innocent prince of 16 like Raja Bhoopat Pal in the same court.
" On the Pahari songs like 'aare ghar mera pare tera ho bich nadia bagoori tere soh' Mian mera patne da taroo ho mian doobi mat jaanda mere soh.
" Conspiracy for the murder of Rajan Mian by the courtiers of the Kingdome.
A little interest and the political will on the part of the government can prepare programs for translating this project into reality. This is possible only when we rises above party politics, regionalism and the narrow parochialism because whether it is Jammu, Kashmir or Ladakh ,the state will be called a developed only when all the three divisions of the state are taken together in practice and not merely in words.
