Jammu, Mar 21 : The protest in Kishtwar today intensified as many people took to streets and blocked the main road outside the Deputy Commissioner's office for hours together against the failure of Power Development Department to restore the electricity in the district.
The district is without electricity for the past one week. Talking to Early Times, Sadat Bashir Dar said the government had failed in restoring the power supply in the district even after seven days as a result of which the general public along with the students of 10th and 12th class whose examinations are currently going on are the worst sufferers. He said due to complete darkness, the students were unable to carry their studies and added that the business community like photostat shops, welding and other such shops were also suffering on account of failure of supply of power. The protesters also raised slogans against the PDP-BJP coalition government for its failure to restore supply of power in the district, despite the fact that Kishtwar has six representatives in both the houses as well as in government.
"Six prominent citizens of Kishtwar are in assembly & Council Sunil Sharma MLA Kishtwar now MoS Revenue, R&B, Bali Baghat MLA Raipur-Domana now cabinet minister, Sajjad Ahmed Kichloo MLC, Ghulam Mohammad Saroori MLA Inderwal, Firdous Tak MLC & Shakti Parihar MLA Doda all basically residents of District Kishtwar- they too fail to raise the voice vigorously" said Anshul Mahajan and added that Kishtwar had a hydro-electrical project which is providing electricity to other parts of the country, but it itself is without electricity for last 7 days--- and it seems people are heading towards stone age. The people also slammed the political representatives of Kishtwar district and also criticized the General Manager NHPC Kishtwar for delay in restoration of power supply. Sensing public mood and resentment, Additional Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar Mohammad Hanief Malik informed the agitating people that restoration work is going on at war footing and assured the people that electricity will be restored by Monday. He urged the people to cooperate with the administration to maintain law and order in the district. "I can understand the anger and sentiments of the people, the damages to 132 KV transmission line are very high & administration is using all its resources for speedy renovation of demaged towers so that power could be restored as early as possible" said ADC Kishtwar to agitating people. The protest was led by Mushtaq Ahmed Hap, Joginder Kumar, Farooq Ahmed Tapal , Farooq Ahmed Dev, Nissar Ahmed Mir ,Ram Krishan Sharma ,Ajay Sharma, Ishtaq Dar, Mansoor Mattoo, Mohammad Amin Butt and Mohammad Khalil Tapal.
