JAMMU, Mar 24: Accusing the Narendra Modi led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government for its failure to take up opening of Demchok route in Ladakh for pilgrimage to Kailash Mansarovar in the on-going talks with the Chinese authorities, the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) Leader Rigzin Jora said that it is unfortunate that the issue was ignored even though it was committed by the BJP during Lok Sabha polls.
In a statement issued here today, the CLP leader Jora said that National Security Advisor Ajit Doval is engaged in border talks with his Chinese counterpart since yesterday. He said that it is unfortunate that he has not taken up with Chinese authorities the opening of a new route from Demchok in Ladakh for pilgrimage to Kailash Mansarovar although this was BJP's commitment in the parliamentary elections.
Jora said that Kailash Mansarovar is the most sacred and holiest site for Buddhists, Hindus and Jains adding that he Ladakh offers the easiest access to the sacred place.
He informed that one can drive upto Kailash Mansarovar from Leh in two days without going through any high pass. So far the access is through Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand and recently another route has been opened through Nathu La pass in Sikkim.
Both these routes are treacherous and vulnerable to vagaries of nature and climate. Large number of pilgrim lost their lives negotiating the high passes and the difficult terrain on these two routes, he said.
Demchok provides the easiest access. In a week a pilgrim can visit the holy site and be back in Delhi in a week's time, said Jora. This will while affording the Buddhists of Ladakh an opportunity to go on pilgrimage will more importantly give the local economy a huge fillip. There are number of Hindus and Jains willing to undertake this pilgrimage, he added.
Jora pointed during Dr Manmohan Singh's second tenure as Prime Minister this was taken up with the Chinese authorities and it was given to understand that the Chinese are not averse to it as Demchok is not a disputed area. In the given circumstances it would have been all more incumbent on part of the Modi government to take up the issue with the Chinese. Ladakhis feel cheated by the BJP who promised them Union Territory status for Ladakh, inclusion of Bodhi in the 8th schedule and opening of Demchok for pilgrimage to Kailash Mansarovar.
