Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 24: A resolution demanding grant of land for building permanent infrastructure for annual Amarnath yatra by Congress in Legislative Council today was rejected by the chairman.
A resolution of Jugal Kishore of Congress seeking reply on the Amarnath land status was not listed in the business. He stood up from his bench during Zero Hour and sought a reply from the Council Chairman why his resolution was rejected.
Amrit Malhotra chairman replied saying, "I have powers and I have rejected it",
This made Jugal angry who rushed into the Well of the House to lodge protests over the rejection. He was supported by another Congress MLC Naresh Gupta. After few minutes of protests, they staged the walkout.
Later talking to reporters outside the House, Jugal said "I had brought a resolution in the house demanding grant of land for building permanent structures for Amarnath yatris at various places including Baltal ".
"I wanted a discussion on it and reply from the government that whether they want to grant land for building infrastructure for Amarnath yatra. It was arbitrarily rejected by the Chairman without giving any reasons", he said.
Jugal claimed that deaths have taken place due to poor infrastructure at the yatra places so we wanted better infrastructure, as BJP is in the government they should facilitate grant of the land for the yatra.
Talking to Early Times, Jugal said though the issue of the land transfers had been the prime concern of the Bhartiya Janta Party during 2008 Amarnath land row, the BJP MLCs in the house did not support the cause.
"I was surprised to see that the BJP MLCs, instead of supporting the Amarnath Land resolution stood up from their chairs and impressed upon the chairman to close the issue," said Jugal Kishore.
It may be recalled that Bhartiya Janta Party in 2008 riding the Amarnath land row had translated the emotions of Jammu into the vote bank that fetched them 11 MLAs.
On May 26, 2008, the then Jammu and Kashmir government led by Ghulam Nabi Azad had transferred 99 acres of forest land to the Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) in the main Kashmir Valley to set up temporary shelters and facilities for pilgrims.
This caused a controversy, with demonstrations from the Kashmir valley against the land transfer and protests from the Jammu region, backed by Bharitya Janta Party.
