SRINAGAR, Mar 24: The decision of the previous NC-Congress coalition government in the state with regard to creation of new administrative units still remains to be a distant dream for the people.
People had pinned hopes with the new government led by Mufti Mohammad Sayeed that it would speed up the process of making the new administrative units functional on the priority basis. This assumed significance in the post flood scenario across the state.
"We had hoped that newly announced administrative units will be made functional in the first instance by the newly elected state government. But not even a hint has been made by this government as to when these units will be made functional," said Khursheed Ahmad from Narbal.
Khursheed said that people of the area were elated at the announcement of an administrative unit for their area, but what has dejected them is that it has not turned out be a reality even after the nine months when the announcement was made.
People say that the revenue department is doing nothing to come true to their expectations since there are long pending issues. The people say that whenever they go to the offices of the revenue officials to settle their issues, they are told that they are on the flood duty.
"Whenever we go to the offices of the revenue department to settle our issues we are told that these issues will be settled in the newly created administrative units which unfortunately is a reality on the paper only. We are told that the whole revenue department is busy in the flood related issues and cannot lend a helping hand," said Mohammad Akbar from Budgam.
Akbar went on saying that on being asked as to why the department takes such a long time to settle even the simplest of the issues, the officials say that there was already a huge dearth of the man power in the department and after the flood; the work of the available staff has doubled, making it difficult for them to look after everything.
When contacted by Early Times, Minister for Revenue, Javed Mustafa Mir listened to the question, but dropped the phone after being asked to respond to the issue. Finance Minister, Dr. Haseeb Drabu did not pick up the phone despite being called by this correspondent.
