Early Times Report

JAMMU, Apr 23: Indeed, there are leading and sophisticated opinion leaders in New Delhi who do not endorse the lop-sided and communally-motivated view that Kashmir means the State of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh and ethnic Kashmiri Sunnis, who are involved in the anti-India movement, are the sole representatives of the entire population of the state. They do recognize the fact that all is not well with Kashmir and the issue needs to be resolved to forge a lasting peace in the state. At the same time, however, they without mincing words say that the will of the Kashmiri Muslims cannot be forced down the throats of Jammu and Ladakh. They ask Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make a new Kashmir policy that is based on the ground realities in the state. One such leading opinion maker is Tavleen Singh, whose views on the Indian State and the issues, including the issue of Kashmir, facing it are too well-known. He herself has authored a book on Kashmir after making several visits to the State of Jammu and Kashmir.
The other day she came out with suggestion that the time has come for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to sit up and make a new Kashmir policy. She attacked the Congress for the mistakes that it committed in Jammu and Kashmir to complicate things there and said it is time for Prime Minister Modi to make a new beginning so that things are corrected in Jammu and Kashmir. Prime Minister Modi has, according to her, no constraints. He has all the authority at his command that needed to be exercised in the best interests of the country and to undo the past wrongs in Jammu and Kashmir. "Prime Minister Modi has no…constraints. So he must get down to making a new policy. A permanent solution in Kashmir must keep in mind that the state includes Jammu and Ladakh which have no wish for 'azadi' or Pakistan," she very candidly said. Tavleen Singh is one of a very few Delhi-based opinion leaders who appreciate the sensitivities and aspirations of the people of Jammu and Ladakh and adopts a holistic approach while commenting on Jammu and Kashmir. The fact that she drew the attention of Prime Minister Modi to the fact the state includes Jammu and Ladakh which have no wish for azadi or Pakistan indicates that she is fully ware of the nature of problem in Jammu and Kashmir and that she also knows that imposing the will of the Kashmiri Muslim leadership on the people of Jammu and Ladakh would create more problems than resolving the existing ones. It is hoped that Prime Minister Modi would consider the suggestion of Tavleen Singh and make a new policy that makes Jammu and Ladakh masters in their own respective houses.
