Governor approves support for sanitation, developmental activities of Municipal Committee, Katra

JAMMU, Apr 23: Governor N.N. Vohra, who is Chairman of Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, held a high level meeting today to discuss various issues concerning the sanitation and planned development of Katra Town. Among those present in the meeting were Dr. S.S. Bloeria and H.L. Maini, both Members of the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board; B.B. Vyas, Principal Secretary to Chief Minister; Dr. M.K. Bhandari, Chief Executive Officer; Dr. M. K. Kumar, Addl CEO, and B. Mohandas, Addl CEO of the Shrine Board. Mohandas is also serving as the Administrator, Municipal Committee, Katra.
The meeting discussed various issues relating to cleanliness and sanitation and planned development of Katra Town. Mohandaas, Administrator Municipal Committee informed that among the pressing problems a large number of the streets and drains in Katra Town require urgent repairs and renovation. He also reported that while he has also initiated action for reviewing and monitoring the sanitation activities, removal of encroachments, improving manpower utilization and rational deployment, the Municipal Committee requires financial assistance for undertaking certain works on immediate basis, apart from the need to procure machinery and equipments which are urgently needed for carrying out sanitation activities.
The Governor asked the CEO to discuss with the Administrator and prioritize the renovation and repair works which the Shrine Board can undertake on time bound basis. He stressed the need for ensuring that the Municipal infrastructure in Katra Town is well maintained and takes care of the heavy foot fall in this Pilgrim Town.
The Governor asked that the Administrator Municipal Committee should identify the works with in the short and long term perspectives so that the Shrine Board could extend assistance to strengthen infrastructure in the areas where the Committee needs such support, for its long term projects. He expressed the need for continued assessment of the requirements and to work out a suitable model for ensuring all round development of Katra Town.
The Governor also approved the Shrine Board's undertaking plantation activities in Katra Town and executing such other works of immediate importance which are identified for being carried out within a definitive time frame.
The Administrator informed that as had been desired by the Governor in the earlier meeting held on 21.02.2015 at Raj Bhavan, a suitable piece of land has been identified for dumping of garbage at some distance from Katra Town and that necessary steps for its approval are being taken. The Governor asked the Administrator to make a time bound Project for getting the landfill site approved from the concerned Regulatory Authorities, including the State Pollution Control Board, and to very early get prepared a Project for a Solid Waste Management on scientific lines.
