Early Times Report
new delhi, Apr 23: Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad today said it was because of the proposed Land Bill that farmers had lost faith in the NDA government as they were of the view that the government wanted to deprive them of land.
Launching a discussion on farmers distress and crisis in the Rajya Sabha , the Congress Member noted that in the past 65 years, on the one hand cultivable land had gone down and on the other construction had come up on cultivable land. ''Today, the farming community is endangered and is losing land, he noted.
Tell the Prime Minister that the entire peasant community it in pain and suffering -- we dont want to politicise it, he said recalling that the UPA government had written off Rs 70,000 crore in farm loans. Blaming the NDA government for the not responding to the agrarian crisis, the Congress Member said despite the climate change that had upset seasonal cycles and destroyed crops, there was government apathy and it was not willing to budge.
From fruits in Jammu and Kashmir, wheat in Jammu, Punjab and Haryana, besides pulses and grains, there were reports of widespread damage to crops from various parts of the country. He recalled that earlier the country used to import food from the US and USSR until the green revolution was brought in by the Congress, Mr Azad said.
He blamed the government for seeking to change the Land Acquisition law. ''What has happened that you want to change the law and done away with the consent clause? He suggested that the government give up its obduracy saying that suicides had literally reached them within the precincts of Parliament, referring to the suicide committed by a farmer from Rajasthan at Jantar Mantar yesterday. The Opposition leader demanded that the NDA government fulfill its promises of hiking MSP by 50 per cent and not merely Rs 50 over the MSP, warning that the government was paving way for more suicides as it was only taking, and not giving anything . The UPA government had given record MSP to farmers, he added.
