Early Times Report

Srinagar, May 5: As the Government claims to be spending huge funds on education many children who read in mobile schools are not hat fortunate. They seek education under the open sky as the authorities have no money to provide them tents.
The shortage of tents has adversely affected the schoolionga s most of the students prefer to remain absent to escape sunburns.
Most of the mobile schools in Kupwara , Budgam , Baramulla and other districts according to reports have no tents available with them . As the mobile schools will be shifting to higher reaches due to migration of the Gujjar and other population living near Forest areas the teachers who teach in these schools are making rounds in their respective zone offices requesting them to provide the tents to these schools. According to an official who works in Zonal Education Office Chadoora Budgam said that their office has not been provided with tents from the last couple of years and that is why they are helpless. The mobile schools in Yusmarg, Doodh Pathree , Kellar and other areas of Budgam and Shopian are worst affected schools as these schools have not been provided with tents from the last several years.
"We appeal Education Minister to come to the rescue of our poor children. We are also human beings and if the mobile schools don't have good infrastructure how can our children get their education" said Mohammad Yousuf a parent from Doodh Pathree Budgam.
Pertinent to mention that in order to provide basic education to the children of the migratory Gujjars , Bakerwals , Shepherds etc the J&K Government envisaged a scheme in late 1970's called Mobile Schools .Similar mobile schools can be found in North African state of Sudan also .There are scores of nomadic tribes in Sudan who also migrate in search of livelihood etc and the local Government provides them mobile schooling since early 1990's. Kenya , Mangolia too have many mobileschools for its nomadic children. After the onset of armed struggle in 1990's the mobile schools in J&K could not function for more than 10 years because of the heavy presence of security forces and militants in the forest areas and it was during the PDP - Congress coalition Government (2002-2008) the Mobile Seasonal schools were again set up in different hilly districts of J&K . At present such schools are operational in Poonch , Rajouri , Doda , Budgam , Shopian, Kupwara , Baramulla , Kargil and few other districts of the State. Nearly 40,000 plus students are enrolled in these schools. In addition to mobile schools , there are dozens of seasonal schools across the state and every year Government seeks services of more than 1000 Educational Volunteers (Teachers) for taking care of these schools and to provide quality education to the nomadic children who otherwise would remain illiterate .
