BANDIPORA, June 23: Relief distribution process by government officials in Bandipora has been politicized and major chunk of relief has been given to politically affluent who were not affected by September floods, depriving the actual victims of their legitimate due. Sources told Early Times that residents of scores of villages in Bandipora district have not been enlisted in the relief distribution assessment list in villages like Shilwat, Sumbal, Muqdamyari, Bungam, Dangarpora, Markundal, Rakh Hajin, Naginpora, Sonerwani, Baba, Rakh Sultanpora, Madhavan, which were badly affected by devastation of floods in September. Residents of these villages said that the relief distribution process has been politicized while major chunk of relief has been given to influential people who were not hit by floods. Ghulam Hassan a local said that 70 per cent of the villages in Bandipora district including Sonawari Constituency were hit by floods but the victims who deserve the relief are being ignored as they lack influence. The height of favouritism is that some revenue officials had visited Sonawari area to assess the damages caused due to floods had not surveyed the whole villages but on the behest of Sarpanchs and panchs he added names of few influential people in their list and ignored the rest. However another local resident wishing anonymity said that sixty per cent of the areas in Sonawari were hit by last year floods but the sufferers who deserve the relief are being ignored as they lack influence. Locals alleged that those who suffered no losses were given cheques of hefty amount while actual victims were ignored. Accusing government officials of committing fraud, the local said that more than 800 residential houses have collapsed in Sonawari Tehsil, but only few affluent people who had access to power corridors have got the relief material and cheques. They said that the concerned officials of revenue didn't bother to visit the other villages of the constituency to access the damage caused by floods in these areas and thus ignored the major sufferers. The locals urged the government to refrain from adopting the biased approach to help the flood victims. They alleged that Revenue officials are making quick bucks from the affluent people for enlisting their names in the assessment list. They appealed the Chief Minister and Divisional Commissioner Kashmir to look into the matter.
