Early Times Report

BUDGAM, June 23: Public Health Centre Soibugh in this central Kashmir district continues to play with the emotions of people as it has become a place of lobbyism. With authorities enjoying no control over the staff there, it is the patient care that has been hit very badly.
Sources said the patient care at PHC Soibugh has been hit badly as the senior doctors remain absent from their duties most of the days. The job of looking after the patients has been virtually taken over by the less experienced BUMS doctors, who have been appointed there under NRHM.
Sources said that in the absence of Dr. Nazir Ahmad (Assistant Surgeon) these BUMS doctors, prescribe allopathic medicine while as they are mandated to prescribe Indian system of Medicines. This has made the mess of health facilities at Soibugh, said the sources.
Sources said that senior dentist Dr. Mohammad Shafi, who hails from Srinagar, attends to his duty as per his will, hardly two to three days in a week. Sources said that the dentist has an influential background that has made him irresponsible towards his duty.
Sources said that no CMO or BMO has succeeded in locking horns with this doctor since he takes care of the dental health of babus at his Jawahar Nagar residence. If somebody tries to bring him on the track, he uses his influence, making him unaccountable for his wrongdoings.
According to the sources, in the absence of this senior dentist, worst things follow in the PHC. Dr. Ishfaq, who observes the patients with the teething problems in the absence of his senior, prescribes one particular drug 'Auger-625' of a particular company 'Meridian Medicare Limited' earning the Dentist a percentage from the company.
What is even worse, as per the sources, the Laboratory at PHC Soibugh has become a collection centre. The lab is not in a position to conduct the certain tests like the TSH and the technician there collects the blood sample and gets these tests at a lab in Srinagar where from he gets commission.
When contacted Ghulam Mohammad Dar, who has just some days before taken over as the Chief medical Officer Budgam, assured that the PHC Soibugh will be set in order as the overhauling is in progress. The CMO said that BUMS doctors are not mandated to prescribe allopathic medicines and the matter will be raised with the concerned BMO.
On the reports that a dentist prescribes the medicine of a particular company, the CMO said that he cannot deny that and if found guilty, then the dentist will not be tolerated at all.
"Let me assure you that this will not be repeated but I seek the cooperation from the people to put a check on this menace. If the lab at PHC Soibugh is not in a position conduct certain tests then let them go to the market for the same," said CMO Budgam.
