Hurriyat (M) chairman wants to regain lost position

Srinagar, July 21:Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq is making all attempts to regain his lost position with Pakistan.
On Tuesday, Mirwaiz rushed to New Delhi to attend an Eid Milan hosted by Pakistan High Commission, ignoring chairman of the hardline Hurriyat faction Syed Ali Geelani and JKLF chief Yasin Malik who have decided to boycott the event.
In the recent past, reports have appeared in the media suggesting that the Pakistani establishment wants to empower Geelani's Hurriyat at the cost of Mirwaiz's faction.
Sources say the Pak authorities had in unambiguous terms told Mirwaiz to join Geelani-led Hurriyat or become irrelevant on the ground in Kashmir. In the past few months, several leaders of Mirwaiz's faction left him to join Geelani's camp.
A senior leader of Geelani's faction told Early Times that the latest developments are part of the plan of Pakistan to strengthen Geelani.
Mirwaiz's colleague Bilal Lone recently said that games are at play to undermine the authority of Mirwaiz. Bilal went to the extent of saying that those who joined Geelani and left Mirwaiz were under pressure to do so.
It has been learnt that due to the change of guard in Pakistan after Nawaz Sharif assumed office, attempts were made to restore Geelani's position after he was ignored by the previous General Musharraf regime.
"However, in the backdrop of latest developments particularly after Modi-Sharif meet at Russia, Mirwaiz wants to appease Islamabad," said the Hurriyat leader.
He said barring Mirwaiz, entire separatist camp expressed displeasure over Pakistan's skipping the K-word during the Modi-Sharif meet.
As the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi sent the invitation of Eid Milan to separatists in Kashmir, most of the separatists declared they would not attend the party to protest Pakistan's recent silence on Kashmir.
When Geelani, Yasin Malik, Asiya Andrabi and others declared they would not take part in the event, Mirwaiz surprised everyone when he said he was attending it.
Sources privy to Mirwaiz said that such a decision was taken after discussing the latest situation and also to remain in good books of Pakistan.
"Mirwaiz's participation would only create further wedges between the already fragmented separatist camp," the sources added.
Meanwhile, according to a Hurriyat spokesman, Mirwaiz and his associate Maulana Masroor Abbas Ansari would be meeting the diplomats of Pakistan in New Delhi and discuss with them the present situation of J&K "besides apprising them about the emotions and aspirations of the people of Kashmir with regard to the Kashmir issue and its resolution."
"The delegation would stress upon that Hurriyat Conference has always advocated for cordial relations between India and Pakistan. However, without making the resolution of Kashmir dispute a priority issue, any dialogue process was not going to lead to the resolution of other issues pending between the two nations," the spokesman said.
