| Health Minister takes favourites to heights, forgets rules | | | Syed Junaid Hashmi

JAMMU, July 21: Minister for Health and Medical Education Choudhary Lal Singh has either no clue of happenings around him or he is deliberately maintaining a discreet silence for the reasons best known to him.
He is ordering inquiries or taking prompt action but in cases where it is either nor required or is being done to satisfy or satiate someone's ego. In all other cases where irregularities or wrongs have become known to the public, he is maintaining a discreet silence. According to the sources, Dr. Riyaz Ahmed who was recently shown the door by the state government was Lal Singh's first appointment in the Jammu and Kashmir Medical Supplies Corporation (JKMSC).
Riyaz who was earlier a right hand man of Ex-Health and Medical Education Minister Taj Mohiuddin was one of the favourites of the present Health and Medical Education Minister, said a source. He added that it is this proximity which ensured Dr. Riyaz gets a healthy posting despite Congress being out of power. State government which had records of wrong doings of Dr. Riyaz prematurely retired him from the services.
After Dr. Riyaz, another blue-eyed man of the new Health and Medical Education ministry is Dr. Sandeep Singh, who is essentially an Assistant Surgeon and a Registrar in the Orthopaedics department was recently appointed as Registrar of Jammu and Kashmir Paramedical Council/Nursing Council in addition to his own duties till further orders. He already holds the charge of Incharge Sports Injury Rehabilitation Centre, Government Medical College Jammu.
If the sources are to be believed, Dr. Sandeep has been appointed primarily because of his proximity with the Health minister. They added that Dr. Sandeep is just senior resident but has been bestowed with a position far higher than what he deserves, according to his stature and position. Sources further said that Dr. Sandeep is seen following the minister wherever he goes for the reasons best known to him.
Sources disclosed that apart from Dr. Sandeep, a close aide of Choudhary Lal Singh has overnight managed to have two private institutes registered on the name of his relatives. Of the two, one is at Bari Brahmana and the other is at Channi Himmat. They further said that this close aide has managed permissions for both these institutes despite the fact that he is still in services and the government is looking desperately for officers with disproportionate assets.
Sources further said that another man who has now become close aide of Health Minister is the one who has been facing several inquiries. He is heading an important branch of medical sciences and is looking after the entire state, said the sources. They said that the minister despite being told about the tainted past of these officials has been kind enough to give them more and more time.
Highly placed sources said that the government may also retire one of these five officials on the grounds that they have disproportionate assets. They added that if this happens, it would be major embarrassment for the Health minister who has been telling one and all about being number 2 in the state government. They further said that Health minister Choudhary Lal Singh is also in for a major embarrassment since a PIL is being filed in the High Court against the functioning of Health and Medical Education department. |
