SRINAGAR, Aug 29: A youth sustained bullet injury in his high after he was fired upon during protest demonstrations in the Safa Kadal area of downtown Srinagar here. The condition of the injured youth is said to be stable in the hospital. Eye-witnesses told Early Times that trouble broke out in the Safa Kadal area after a group of youth started pelting stones on police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel. The youth did not pay any heed to the assurances of the police that youth arrested from the area during night raids would be released soon.
"This morning people belonging to the Saraf Kadal and adjoining areas observed strike against the arrest of two youth. The protesters sat on dharna in the Gojwara Chowk and demanded immediate release of the arrested youth. They also shouted slogans in favour of release of youth and said both of them are innocent," said eye-witnesses.
As soon as Station House Officer (SHO) of Nowhatta police station came to know about the dharna he reached the Gojwara Chowk and asked the protesters to end the strike. The police officer assured that the arrested youth would be released once the formalities are completed in the concerned police station.
"SHO Nowhatta promised to the people that the arrested youth would be released and there was no reason for them to carry on with the protests. He also told them that if he failed to keep his word then people are at liberty to continue with the strike. Following the assurance of the police officer the people decided to call off the strike and returned to their respective homes," said eye-witnesses. However, a group of youth present in the Saraf Kadal area started pelting stones on the police and CRPF personnel. The stone pelting led to chaos and confusion in the area and the shopkeepers downed their shutters in no time. The vehicular movement was also affected due to the stone pelting incident in the area. The agitated youth resorted to intense stone pelting on the mobile bunker posted in the area. One of the police personnel fired upon the protesting youth and as a result of which one of the youth sustained injuries in his thigh. The injured has been hospitalized and his condition is stable in the hospital. The injured youth identified as Sajad Ahmad Dar is basically a resident of Neeru-Gurez in Bandipora district in North Kashmir. He is nowadays putting up as a tenant in the Saraf Kadal area.
Following the incident there was tension in the area with people observing strike against the police action. Shopkeepers of Saraf Kadal, Gojwara, Bohri Kadal, Kadi Kadal and Kawdara suspended their business and downed their shutters against the firing incident.
