Srinagar, Sept 3: After facing a humiliating defeat in the 2014 Assembly polls the former Chief Minister and National Conference Working President Omar Abdullah seems to have lost the hope as he spends more time holidaying at health resorts rather than introspecting what went wrong and what's required to put back JK's oldest political party, which is struggling for survival, back on the track.
Sources told Early Times that Omar prefers to spend most of the time at health resorts where he is joined by his friends, mostly non-locals.
They said recently Omar spent quite some time in Gulmarg. Insiders said around a dozen of his friends gave him company. "From cycling to gaming, Omar was seen active in the meadows," said a senior official in the Tourism department, pleading anonymity.
"Some of his friends told him that he was gaining weight because of tension and that he should concentrate on his health," sources privy to the gala events said.
Omar has been opting for holidaying at a time when National Conference could emerge as a strong opposition. "He even avoids issuing statements on matters of serious concern for State politics," sources said. As for Srinagar, considered an erstwhile NC stronghold, Omar has rarely been seen in the city after historic defeat in the Assembly elections last year.
Omar's move to stay away from active politics in Srinagar has drawn flak from party leadership. "At this critical juncture, it was time not to hide but be a support to Dr Farooq Abdullah. By staying away from the party affairs, the jealously of a son towards his father is getting exposed," said a NC leader, pleading anonymity.
Ahead of the anniversary of the September 7 floods, sources said the NC leadership wanted Omar to start a "colony to colony" public outreach program in Srinagar, the district which was worst hit by the deluge. "We had a plan to bring Omar back to Srinagar that has traditionally been our stronghold… It was opportune time to start this public outreach program and other initiatives ahead of September 7 flood anniversary but he is busy in holidaying," said a NC leader.
He said Omar had been unduly pampered by his party colleagues like Nasir Wani and Devinder Rana. "As if this was not enough, the young crop of politicians like Junaid Matoo, Tanvir Ahmed Sadiq, Salman Sagar and Agha Ruhulla appreciate him for the sake of it and copy him for everything he does," he added.
The sources said the young leaders even prepare Omar's program for holidaying. "They also fix the venues. This young team is more concerned about keeping him (Omar Abdullah) happy than to look into the party affairs," the sources said.
Dr Farooq on the other hand has been active for his politics. From issuing statements to addressing party conventions, it is mostly senior Abdullah who is seen in action. "Omar at the most tweets on politics," the insiders said. Despite repeated attempts Omar Abdullah could not be contacted for comments.
