1975 EMERGENCY AN UNFORTUNATE EVENT
Dr. P.P Singh9/22/2015 10:31:26 PM
It was on 25th June 1975 a state of emergency was declared in India by the then high profile Prime Minister of India Mrs. Indira Gandhi. The imposition of emergency in India was declared with a view to calm down various opposition parties who were spear heading different types of revolutionary struggles against Indian national congress headed by Indira Gandhi.
The most prominent was JP movement a Sarvodya leader from Bihar. All fundamental rights were suspended, Media was put on halt. About 250 journalists and their indigenous publications were banned and about 51 foreign publications were cut to its size and completely banned. The state of emergency continued in Indian for 19 months. During emergency period forcely family planning was carried out. Couples were asked to go for family planning under strict direction from the government and this lead to resignation of Dr. Karan Singh who was then heading department of health govt. of India. The entire India was being run by Mr. Sanjay Gandhi the youngest son of Mrs. Indira Gandhi. Emergency was like a big black spot on the face of democracy of India.
There was a wrong reporting to Mrs Indira Gandhi that some opposition leaders and other forces against congress rule are hell bent to destabilize India. Though after emergency shah commission totally denied that there was any intelligence input nor there was any such secret reporting regarding destabilization of India it was purely at whim and fancy of India and Sanjay who planned imposition of emergency in the country. The big national political leaders like JP Narayam Morarji Desai, Acharya JB Kriplani , Choudhary Charan singh, A B Vajpai, Lal Krishan Advani, Nana ji, George Fernandis and Chander Shekher were arrested and put behind the bars.
40 years back historical events left all national leaders (especially opposite in high and dry) that atleast congress leaders will never impose emergency in the country because imposition of emergency is like murdering democracy and Indira Gandhi did it with a sole intention to saver her chair. There was any version among the congress leaders that emergency could have been avoided had few congress leaders resisted but Indira was so strong that no congress leaders at that time dared even to talk ill of what she was going.
Dr. Fakrudin Ali Ahmed the then president of India was in deep asleep and he was asked to get up in the mid of 25th June 1975 and he was forcibly asked to signed documents proclaiming emergency in the country, thereafter cabinet was informed about the declaration of state of emergency next day. After this action, she was very upset but before this events three things happened and went against Mrs Indira Gandhi (i) the death of DP Dhar her very close aid (ii) Allahabad high court decision against Mrs. Gandhi and (iii) defeat of congress in Gujarat Assembly elections.
Opposition leaders had great regards for Pt. Nehru family and Mrs Indira Gandhi being daughters of Pt. Nehru was beloved leader of India. She lost election in 1977 and Janta Party came into existence it was a collision govt. at the centre with Morarji Desai as Prime minister. Mrs Indira Gandhi realized her mistakes during emergency period. JP Narayan being elder and a close friend of Pt. J L Nehru advice Mrs Indira Gandi that victory and defeat are the two sides of democracy and if you will serve the nation from the core of you heart. You will again win the election and heart of the people. There were main two reasons for imposing emergency in the country
i) On 12th June 1975 Allahabad court on Raj Narayan writ petition that Smt Indira Gandhi election (Parliamentary) be declared as null and vide because of heavy corruption charges and large scale rigging in he election on this Allahbad high court declared Mrs Gandhi election as null and void from Raeberalli. Simultaneously court also put a ban of 6 years for Indira Gandhi contesting the Parliamentary election and 3rdly huge congress defeat in Gujarat assembly elections. These three happening one after the other badly jolted the Indira Gandhi and she in order to save her chair she declared imposition of emergency in the country on 25th of june 1975 at 11:45 P.M in the night.
When emergency was declared in the country and news of this item was published in the paper next day as such without fibricating or modifying its contents Sanjay Gandhi immediately called Mr. Inder Kumar Gujaral who was then information and communication Minister in Indira Gandhi govt. and gave him thrashing asking him that why the contents of Allahabad courts decision were not modified and set right before its publication on this Mr. Inder Kumar Gujaral became annoyed and resigned as Cabinet Minister from Mrs. Gandhi govt. Moreover, he was not happy with imposition of emergency in the country.
When the new govt. came into power at the centre with Janta Party collision dispensations Parliament was dissolved on 18 January 1977 and emergency was lifted from the country on 21 march 1977 and all constitutional provision suspended during emergency were restored in 1977. Congress faced humiliating defeat.
Smt Indira Gandhi was leader of masses but her some of the decisions shaken the country sovereignty and integrity by spreading the venom of hatred which have now become normal after a gap of many many years - latest statement by one of our great leader about emergency must be taken seriously perspective and analyze that when constitutional provision are disturbed how painful becomes the lives of citizen who are peace loving and believe in democracy and secular fabric of India. Those who have suffered a burnt of milk drink the whey after getting it cooled.
