Pahalgam, Oct 1: Accusing the coalition government of damaging the essence of democratic institutions, MLA Pahalgam Altaf Ahmad Wani on today threatened to move a Privilege Motion against Tourism Department officials.
"Being a representative of Pahalgam, my name should have been mentioned on the foundation stone (of the renovated Pahalgam Club). This is against the essence of democracy," Wani told reporters near the venue at Pahalgam.
Altaf said that not mentioning the MLA's name on the foundation stone was the violation of rule 29 of GAD-2012. "According to the rule 29 of GAD-2012 it is mandatory for them to mention my name on the stone," he said.
He said he would move a Privilege Motion against the JKTDC and Tourism Department officials who, according to him, deliberately didn't mention his name on the foundation stone.
He said that Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed had promised on the floor of the House that democratic institutions would be strengthened. "However, it is surprising that in his rule the essence of the democratic institutions are being damaged," he said.
He said in the previous National Conference-Congress regime he worked hard for the early completion of the project. Due to efforts of former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah work on the project got completed in last year, he said.
"However the scheduled inaugural function got delayed due to the floods," he said.
Wani also criticized the government for throwing up a lavish party for those who attended the function. "What was the need of hosting singers, musicians, political workers, agents, officers of various departments who have no connection with the Tourism Department. The state is already facing heavy financial crunch," he said.
The MLA Pahalgam said it would have been better for the government if it had used the money incurred on the function to rehabilitate some victims of the 2014 floods.
