Sunshine brings respite to fog-hit Jammu

Jammu, Jan 25: After days of continuous chill, residents of Jammu got some respite today as bright sunshine in the day improved weather conditions."Weather will now improve in the coming days giving respite to people from harsh cold conditions," weatherman today said.He further said that western disturbance is also likely to hit the state by January end and dry spell may come to end with fresh spell of showers on January 28 and 30. Yesterday, Jammu witnessed record breaking season's minimum temperature 0.5 Degree Celsius in 70 years.In 1945, minimum temperature was recorded at 0.6 Degree Celsius and in 2001, it was recorded 0.8 Degree Celsius. The MeT official said that conditions will remain dry till January 27, adding, "mainly cold and dry weather is expected in most parts of the state till January end."
Presently there are no signs of the arrival of western disturbance in the state, which mainly trigger rains. So the weather is likely to remain dry till the month end," he asserted.In view of prevailing cold conditions, the School Board of Education has changed the school timings.As per an order issued here, the timings of all the schools, including government and private, have been changed from 1000 hrs to 1600 hrs from January 22 to 30 .Violators will be dealt strictly, said an order.People especially the roadside vendors were seen burning firewood and charcoal to protect themselves from chill while the big business establishments have installed warmers and electric heaters to provide respite to the visitors from the harsh weather.Vehicles moved at snail's pace on the road with headlights and indicators on, to avoid any untoward accident due to fog.Air and rail traffic was the worst hit due to mist , Jammu airport and railway platforms witnessed heavy rush of passengers.Tourists, including the Vaishno Devi pilgrims, faced hardships at the platforms in view of delayed trains and immense cold.
