No-helmet, no-petrol' move fails before take-off | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 2 : The 'no-helmet, no-petrol' move initiated by the traffic wing of state police to instil among two-wheeler operators the habit of wearing helmets has failed before it could take-off. The move was started by traffic police on the pattern of such moves which were already underway in some big cities of the country. Petrol Dealers Association, Jammu, had welcomed the suggestion put forth by the traffic police not to give petrol to two-wheeler operators without helmet. Traffic police also had a meeting with the association members before the move was actually started by them. For two days or so, there was much activity and thousands of rupees were spent on banners, but no step has been taken to implement the move on the ground level, according to police sources. There are many hurdles. One is the altercations, which the motorcyclists, who come to fill petrol without helmets, pick up with the staff. These altercations often lead to fights but police have made no arrangements for the security of petrol pump staff. Association president Anan Sharma said despite the assurance given by traffic police, banners to create awareness among two-wheeler operators about the uses of helmet were yet to be erected at petrol pumps. Although the "no-helmet, no-petrol" move surprised many at first, the petrol pump owners offered their cooperation. "This is a move to dissuade bikers from going without helmets," sources said. "The law making it mandatory for two-wheeler riders to wear helmets has to be implemented in letter and spirit because it affects the lives of motorcyclists," the sources added. |
