Mehbooba sticks to her stand

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Feb 2: PDP president Mehbooba Mufti met with state Governor NN Vohra at Raj Bhawan here in Jammu as per schedule and, as was expected, she disarmed her critics who had asserted and reasserted that what she said at the Srinagar meeting of the party on January 31 was a "mere posturing" and that she would assume the office of Chief Minister sooner than later.
After meeting with the State Governor, Mehbooba Mufti reiterated her January 31 stand and virtually tore into Prime Minister Narendra Modi government and the BJP for creating troubles for her father late Mufti Sayeed by raking up "controversial" issues and declared that there could be PDP-BJP coalition government in place only after the Union Government created conducive atmosphere in Kashmir.
In fact, she candidly and plainly told media persons after her meeting with the State Governor that the Narendra Modi Government had to make some "major" announcements to create conditions conducive for the government formation. "I don't have the vision which Mufti sahab had, neither do I have the experience right now. Before the formation of the new J&K government, I want the Central Government to take some 'concrete' confidence building measures for the region," she told media persons, and added that "the BJP government needed to take some concrete measures for the benefit of the state before a final call could be taken on, whether, the PDP-BJP coalition needs to continue".
The statement of Mehbooba Mufti was unambiguous, unequivocal and self-explanatory. She clearly told the BJP that she would break her ties with the BJP in case it didn't fall in line.
Obviously, she wanted definite and categorical assurance on issues like Article 370, which grants the state special status, Article 35-A that bars the non-state subjects from enjoying citizenship rights in J&K, repealing of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), return of NHPC-managed power projects to the state government, a freehand to run the administration, initiation of dialogue with Kashmiri separatists, initiation of trilateral talks on the future of J&K between India, Pakistan and Hurriyat leadership, a comprehensive financial package, to mention only a few.
The stand she took on the government formation in J&K or the manner in which she said that if the Narendra Modi Government really wanted the PDP-BJP coalition government in place in the state, it had no other option but to accept all of her pre-conditions only to put the power hungry and desperate BJP on the mat. Her stand must have broken the hearts of the former BJP ministers and others in the BJP who were aspiring for ministerial berths in the new government. They must be singing in the strain of the swan.
Besides dashing all the hopes of the BJP, which stooped low to the extent possible for cultivating Mehbooba Mufti, the PDP president also upset the applecart of the National Conference which had hoped that Mehbooba Mufti would re-tie-up with the BJP and form government with it. An alliance with the BJP would have destroyed all the support base of the PDP in the Valley and the NC and the Congress would have been the beneficiaries. Shrewd as she is, Mehbooba Mufti with one stroke dashed all the hopes of the BJP and the NC.
But more than that, the stand that she took has pleased the very vast constituency in Kashmir - constituency which is very dear to her.
It is now clear that the state will remain under Governor's rule for some more time and there is also the great possibility of mid-term polls in the state.
