Early Times Report Jammu, May 11: A police Inspector, who is SHO of a police station in the city's posh area, is alleged to be extracting money from unauthorised vendors and rehriwalas for allowing them to function along the roadside. He has deputed two cops of the police station to make collections from the vendors and rehriwalas. The proceeds, which run into thousands of rupees a day, thus collected are handed over to the SHO by the cops every evening, according to police sources. The number of unauthorised vendors and rehriwalas, who are operational in the area, doubles in the evening when thousands of people arrive here from different parts of the country. "Those, who give no money or give less money, are not allowed to work," sources alleged. Though these unauthorised rehriwalas were removed from the area by the authorities concerned some time back, the SHO had again allowed them to function illegally, sources alleged. To exert pressure on the authorities concerned for allowing the unauthorised rehriwalas to operate with impunity from law, he had also utilised the services of an ex-Minister by sending them to him, sources claimed. Sources said though some senior police officers had asked him to remove the illegal vendors and rehriwalas from the areas, that fell under his jurisdiction, he had dared to ignore their directives. |
