srinagar, May 13: Return and rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits to the valley has over the past few days making news both in the state and outside. However, on ground no progress is seen with people at helm resorting to 'rhetoric' in this regard.
Despite being in power at the centre for the past of couple of years now, Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) has failed to fulfill the promise of dignified return of Kashmiri Pandits to the valley. The party believes in issuing statements in this regard while doing nothing. As such the community members are somewhat perplexed about their future.
"In May 2014, BJP came to power at the centre and it was promised that the Kashmiri Pandits would be rehabilitated in a dignified manner. Although, two years have passed since then there has been no headway in this matter and there is confusion around. The party is playing with the sentiments of the community members and doing nothing for our return," said a group of Kashmiri Pandits.
It would be in place to mention here that the central and state governments have so far failed to identity and take possession of even a single inch of land where the townships for Kashmiri Pandits would come up. This is despite the fact that statements in this regard were issued by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
"When Congress was in power BJP would castigate them that they are not serious in return and rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits. Given the lackadaisical attitude of the BJP government in this regard it seems the condemnation of Congress on this issue was just for the sake of gaining political mileage. The party is once again beating the drum vis-à-vis return of Kashmiri Pandits with no practical steps being taken on this front," said the group of Kashmiri Pandits.
Over the years the BJP led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the centre has been saying that Kashmiri Pandits would be rehabilitated in composite townships in different districts of Kashmir valley. However, the plan is yet to be implemented on ground with members of the community believing that they have become a 'fodder' for the political parties especially BJP.
"Initially it was said that around 1700 kanals of land would be identified for creating townships for Kashmiri Pandits in Central, South and North Kashmir. Following widespread criticism from people especially separatists the plan was shelved and kept in back-burner. Over the past one week or so the issue has once again gained momentum and it remains to be seen for how long it will go on," said the group of Kashmiri Pandits.
This group of Kashmiri Pandits said that both the central government and state government should clear the air once for all and make them aware about their plan of action with respect to return and rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits in valley. They said that mere rhetoric won't work and time for action has come.
