SSB jawan killed in terrorist attack at Zakura, 8 others injured

SRINAGAR, Oct 14: A jawan of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) was killed while as eight others were injured after militants attacked some vehicles of the force at Zakura in the outskirts of summer capital. Condition of three jawans is stated to be critical at the hospital.
Reports said that a party of SSB came under attack while they were returning after discharging law & order duty. Some militants who are in a lane fired towards the convoy of SSB leading to injuries to at least nine SSB personnel. One of the injured jawans succumbed to his injuries at a hospital here.
IGP operations SSB Deepak Kumar told a national news channel that the incident took place when the militants attacked a convoy of SSB while they were returning from discharging professional duties on law & order front. He said that nine personnel of the force were injured with one of them succumbing to his injuries.
"In the evening while the convoy was returning from their duties some boys appeared in a lane in Zakura area and started firing towards our jawans. In the initial gun burst the jawans were injured. Our boys returned the fire and there was a shootout. The firing between the two sides carried on for at least 25-30 minutes and the militants managed to escape while taking cover of darkness," said the IGP.
Following the shootout the personnel of Jammu & Kashmir Police, Sashastra Seema Bal and Central Reserve Police Force launched a crackdown and carried out search operation in the area order to arrest the militants who carried out the attack. The search operation was going on till the report was filed. However, no arrest has been made so far.
Meanwhile, Governor Narendra Nath Vohra held a meeting at the Raj Bhavan today to review the security situation consequent to the militant attack at Pampore earlier this week.
An official spokesman said that the meeting was attended by Northern Army Commander; Director General of Police J&K; GOC 15 Corps; Principal Secretary to Governor; IG, CRPF; IG, (Ops) CRPF and Intelligence Bureau head in J&K.
"It was recalled that after the Pathankot terror attack, it had been decided, during the then period of Governor's Rule, that a Multi Agency Security Audit shall be conducted by the State Police in close collaboration with the IB, CAPF, Army, Air Force and other concerned agencies. In this context, and in the background of the terror attacks at Poonch, Uri, Handwara and, most recently at Pampore, it was agreed that surveillance should be enhanced not only along the IB and LoC, as already done, but also in the entire hinterland, counter-terrorist operations should be resumed and, side by side, identified steps should be taken to safeguard and effectively ensure the safety/security of all civil and military vital installations/establishments in J&K," said the official spokesman.
