Moderate earthquake jolts Chenab Valley, no report of any damage | | | Early Times Report
Bhadarwah, Oct 14: An earthquake of moderate intensity on Friday morning shakes Chenab Valley of district Doda, whose epicentre was measured in Bhadarwah Valley, triggered panic among people. The quake, measuring 3.7 on the Richter Scale, struck the Chenab Valley belt at 10.28 am, Met officials said. "As of now, there is no immediate report of any casualty or damage to property," said SDM Bhadarwah Mohd Anwar Banday. Panic-stricken people rushed out of their homes when the quake, whose epicentre was 7km South - East of Bhadarwah Valley, rattled the picturesque Valley. People of Chenab valley are apprehensive of tremors after a study of the US scientists published last year, which predicted that there is a possibility of major earthquake in J&K. According to an Oregon State University statement, new geologic mapping in the Himalayan mountains of Kashmir suggests that the region is ripe for a major earthquake that could endanger the lives of as many as a million people. Scientists have found that the Reasi fault in Jammu province has been building up pressure for some time, suggesting that when it does release or "slip", the resulting earthquake may be large - as much as magnitude 8.0 or greater. Although Jammu and Kashmir remains seismically active and falls under danger zone, there is possibility of tremors, but no body can predict exact location or timing of the earthquake," said renowned seismic expert and Rector Bhadarwah Campus, Prof G.M.Bhat."People should take precautions but they need not get panicked by these reports," Bhat added. |
