| SKUAST-Jammu releases alternaria alternata for controlling water hyacinth | | |  Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 27: AICRP-Weed Management, SKUAST-Jammu today released a potential bio-formulation of Alternaria alternata for the control of water hyacinth (Jal Kumbi) in water pond at Rattian village in presence of Madan Lal Sharma, ex-Sarpanch of Tanda Panchayat and Sagar Chand Sharma, Zonal Agriculture Officer, Agriculture Production Department Zone Kirpind.
During the event Dr. B. R. Bazaya, Sr. Scientist & Incharge, AICRP-Weed Management and Dr. R. Puniya, Jr. Scientist discussed the management of water hyacinth by Alternaria and other weeds of Rabi season crops with the farmers and officers of the department.
Dr. Bazaya emphasized that water hyacinth (Jal Kumbi ) is a major problem due to heavily infestation of water bodies like lakes, farm ponds, community ponds and other perennial streams in the Jammu region and it is not possible to straight way go for the usage of chemicals/herbicides for managing water hyacinth under aquatic eco-systems because of their deleterious implications on the aquatic life.
Heavy infestations of water hyacinth has gained notoriety in ravaging aesthetic value of water bodies, impeding and obstructing actual discharge thereby squeezing the actual size of water bodies besides endangering the aquatic life by lowering the O2 rates in the water.
Officers of Agriculture Production Department zone Kirpind Gulshan Sharma, Gourav Jasrotia, Amit Balotra, Balwinder Singh and farmers of Rattian village witnessed and graced the event. |
