| Farooq keen to regain power | | | Hours after the state of Jammu and Kashmir was placed under the President's rule the National Conference President, Dr Farooq Abdullah, has demanded that the election to the Assembly be held as early as possible. He sought early conduct of elections to Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, apprehending that the BJP may attempt to get these delayed for the fear of imminent defeat due to its mis-governance and failure in keeping up the promises. It is sheer impatience on the part of NC President who is keen to taste power as his chances for winning an absolute majority in Assembly are bright. But he should know it that when he could wait for six years from 1990 and 1996 when the state was under the Governor's rule and later it came under the President's rule. In 1996 fresh elections to the state Assembly were held and the National Conference had won an absolute majority by getting 57 seats. So when in 1996 Farooq Abdullah had shown patience why not this time?
It is believed that after 1990 the situation was fluid in Kashmir with the onset of the Pakistan sponsored insurgency. And at that time Farooq Abdullah was apprehensive of the victory of his National Conference. It seems that Farooq Abdullah is keen to regain power and that can be done by holding the Assembly poll as early as possible. Yes, he is right when he finds the BJP unprepared for contesting the election as the BJP, in alliance with the PDP, had not fulfilled its commitment made to the people. And he finds this fear of losing the poll battle responsible for the delay in the election. Farooq should know it better than anybody else that had not the state been placed under the Governor's rule the next election to the Assembly was due in 2020. Let Farooq Abdullah wait for another year or two to get back what he had lost in 2008.
Why he demands early election ? He finds the ground smooth for the win of the National Conference. And the party that could pose a challenge to the NC could be PDP which is tottering with one leader joining the NC or the Peoples' Conference or the Congress. Hence he wants the elections to be held shortly so that the chances for the NC win could be brighter. He has issued statements which come close to the separatists and the way he has been berating the BJP is being appreciated by people in Kashmir. If the elections are held as early as possible the NC would win and further delay in the holding of the poll could delay the chances for the NC to regain power. |
