Farooq's autonomy means trifurcation of Jammu province, slavery of Jammu, Ladakh | News Analysis | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 21: Former J&K CM and NC president Farooq Abdullah is out to divide Jammu province into three parts and enslave the people of the province. This is clear from what he said in Jammu Thursday while admitting to his party the expelled BJP man, controversial Gagan Bhagat. Admitting him to the NC, Farooq Abdullah said the NC would bring a resolution to grant regional autonomy to all the three regions of the state - Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. "I want to make a promise that God willing if we form the next Government, we will bring a resolution to grant autonomy to the three regions (within 30 days). Regional autonomy would work as a balm to the wounds of the people as every area would get its due representation. Regional autonomy is not there and it is going to be our first priority. Regional autonomy document is prepared and needs some improvements," he said. Those who have read the April 13, 1999 NC's 28-page "Regional Autonomy Report" know what this report contains. This report - apart from dividing Jammu province into three sub-regions (plains of Jammu, so-called Chenab Valley and Pir Panjal) - contains really nothing for the people of Jammu and Ladakh. If granted, it will be autonomy only in name or it will be sham autonomy. The people of Jammu province and Ladakh regions gave been demanding definite political instruments invested with legislative, executive and financial powers since 1947 saying such instruments alone could cater to their specific needs and address their concerns. "Regional autonomy, sans power to legislate, is no autonomy. Regional autonomy within an autonomous state with New Delhi having no power except in matters relating to defence, foreign affairs and communications will not be autonomy; it will be one more step towards the separation of J&K and Ladakh from India and destruction of the minorities like the Hindus, the Buddhists and Sikhs in J&K. Farooq Abdullah's autonomy concept has all the potential of achieving what the separatists and Pakistan couldn't achieve during all these 71 years of the state's accession to India," experts say, adding that "what Farooq Abdullah said on Thursday in Jammu was his desperate attempt to hoodwink and mislead the people of Jammu province". "Let the state has three chief ministers and three assemblies, one each for Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh, with one Governor and one High Court. Let the state has three Public Service Commissions, one each for Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. Let the state has three civil secretariats, one each for Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. This is called autonomy, and not the one Farooq Abdullah's 'Regional Autonomy Report of April 13, 1999' talked about," objective J&K-watchers have opined while reacting to the Farooq Abdullah's autonomy statement. "Reorganization of the state on regional basis is the solution to the issues facing Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh," they have opined, and very rightly. One thing appears to be clear: Farooq Abdullah, or for that matter, any other NC leader, just can't hoodwink the people of Jammu and Ladakh as they know the NC through and through and have suffered for decades at the hands of Abdullahs. |
