JU organises 3rd Web Talk on ‘Women and COVID 19’ | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 22: Continuing the Web talk series, University of Jammu organised the 3rd Web talk on ‘Women and COVID 19’ which was delivered by Prof Vishav Raksha, Director Centre for Women Studies and Professor Department of Sociology which was attended by more than 100 participants across different universities including Dubai, Pune, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Amritsar, Tamil Nadu and many faculty members and scholars from JU. Prof Manoj Dhar, Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu who was the Chief Guest of the talk in his opening remarks voiced his satisfaction over the efforts put in by the Media cell, JU in organising these talks. Prof Dhar remarked that it is a very positive use of the time on hand wherein University faculty is coming forward and sharing their expertise in different fields with the scholars across India and other countries as well. He appreciated the theme of the talk and agreed on the much needed acknowledgment and inclusion of women sensitive measures in managing the COVID 19 pandemic crisis. He appreciated the views expressed by the speaker. Prof Vishav Raksha in her talk deliberated in detail how the pandemic crisis is affecting men and women differently and how this difference is observed more in societies like India where rigid hierarchies of gender, caste and class exist very firmly. Quoting in detail the UN Policy brief on impact of COVID 19 on women, she elaborated the four dimensions in which the women have been severely hit by the pandemic crisis. These included the first which is the Economic impact on the women who do paid work in both formal and informal sectors, how the lockdown arising out of COVID crisis is taking away their jobs and how they were experiencing the challenge of working amidst these times especially the healthcare workers including nurses and doctors. |
