Let Punjabi also be included as official language of J&K: Subash Gupta | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
KATHUA, Sept 18: Former MLC and senior Congress leader Subash Gupta has expressed its serious concern over non-inclusion of Punjabi language in the official languages of J&K. While participating in the signature campaign organized by Jammu & Kashmir Khalsa Dal & Shiromani Akali Dal (Youth) at Gurudwara Chowk for inclusion of Punjabi as official language, Subash Gupta said that Punjabi is over centuries old language and the demand for inclusion of Punjabi language as official language is very much genuine and need to be addressed at the earliest. He further said that Congress welcomes the decision of Union Cabinet for approving bill under which Kashmiri, Dogri and Hindi, apart from the existing Urdu and English, will be the official languages in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. “But Congress condemns the step motherly treatment meted out to Punjabi speaking people,” he said. Gupta said that the ancient saint’s scripts are in Punjabi while sacred Guru Granth Sahib is also in Punjabi. Even the scripts of various religious books are noted down in Punjabi although they do not belong to Sikh religion, he added. Subash Gupta said that in most of the Northern parts of India the mother tongue is Punjabi. Even from J&K a large number of girls are married in Punjab and vice-versa. He urged the Union Government to reconsider its decision and include Punjabi as one of the official languages in J&K like other five languages which were earlier recognized by the Government of India. Gupta while extending support of Congress towards Punjabi loving community said that Congress demands inclusion of Punjabi as official language in J&K and will fight for the cause.
