Ek Se Bhaley Do! Omar lives in 2 Govt bungalows at Gupkar | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 18: Even as many in the government could be in need of secured accommodation in the fortified Gupkar locality of Srinagar, former Chief Minister and National Conference President Omar Abdullah has been enjoying life in not one but two government bungalows in the area for years. Official sources told Early Times that in brazen violation of norms, Omar Abdullah as the then Chief Minister had got two bungalows allotted for himself on same Gupkar. It was reliably learnt that over the years, the government spent millions annually on the maintenance of the twin bungalows. Officials said this was not only in violation of norms but showed how lavishly Omar Abdullah had been living over the years and that the same continued even when Peoples Democratic Party led government succeeded Omar’s coalition allowing him to “enjoy the luxuries.” Officials are raising numerous genuine questions. “Why does anyone need two bungalows in one locality? This has never happened in the past and he (Omar) has set a bad example of living luxuries life at the cost of government exchequer,” said a senior official on the condition of anonymity. He said over the years the officials were pressurized not to make it public that Omar was holding two bungalows next to each other. A senior official said “what needs to be probed is that why would one man need two houses or bungalows in the same locality?” “Some of us may have more than one houses but it never happens that one person has two accommodations in one locality. Or was it that activities at one house were kept secret from the other house because many rumors have been floating since,” quipped a senior official on the condition of anonymity. It was reliably learnt that Omar was using one house for family and relatives and the other one was his “near and dear friends.” “One thing is clear that Omar was living a luxurious life at the cost of government resources and this is something against the fundamentals of democracy,” the official added. It is pertinent to mention that Omar recently announced that he would leave the government accommodation at Gupkar by the end of October. Despite repeated attempts, Omar was not available for comments. |
