Shrines of Ladakh, Kashmir and Jammu – this year on State tableau
‘Focus is on representing three cultures of J&K’
1/16/2007 12:39:27 AM
ASHUTOSH SHARMA JAMMU | JAN 15 Imagine having a glimpse of shrines from the three distinct regions of Jammu and Kashmir State at one sight – Oh yes! This will become true along the Rajpath-Janpath-Vijaypath road stretch this Republic Day when a tableau from this state will surge through the President, Prime Minister and other dignitaries depicting Bawe-Wali-Mata, Charar-e-Sharif and a Gumpa from Ladakh. While there have been allegations in the past of tableaux from J&K most of the time highlighting just single region of the state, this year all the three regions have been given equitable representation. The tableaux from J&K have won first prizes three times in a row in 1999, 2000 and 2001. Rafeeq Masoudi, secretary J&K Academy for Art Culture and Languages, who flagged off a delegation of artistes to New Delhi today, said this year’s tableau is representing Jammu, Ladakh and Kashmir regions. This apart, senior Congress leaders also submitted their "request" to Manmohan Singh to shoe his willingness to be a Congress nominee for the Amritsar seat. The Congress supremo, Sonia Gandhi, too, was approached by Punjab Congress leadership in this regard. Since Sonia was conscious of the continuing bitt...

Delhi, Islamabad to expedite Siachen resolution
Army Chief calls for careful handling by Govt
1/16/2007 12:21:58 AM
BL KAK NEW DELHI, JAN 15 Even as the Indian Army leadership supports the drive launched by the Congress-led coalition government at the Centre to build bridges of amity and friendship with Pakistan, a signal has once again poured out from the Army headquarters, cautioning the ruling political class against any hasty decision on the troops' future in the Siachen glacier area. Top ranking defence officers and planners do not deny that the most inhospitable Siachen glacier area in Ladakh region continues to be a "huge" burden, militarily and finacially. But they are seemingly against preference for political solution to the Siachen dispute with Pakistan. They, in fact, want the powers ...
