Rajouri killings: Women come forward to join VDGs

Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 9: As authorities decided to strengthen the Village Defence Committees (VDCs) now name changed as Village Defence Guards (VDGs), a large number of women are coming forward to join the VDGs to fight with terrorists. Not only in the terror affected the Rajouri district, but women in a large number have also volunteered themselves to become part of VDGs in Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban and Reasi districts also. Important to mention here that the all-women VDCs have played a significant role in controlling terrorism in the far-flung areas of Jammu where presence of security forces were negligible. CRPF to provide arms training to VDC members

Agencies New Delhi, Jan 9: The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) will provide weapons training to village defence committee guards or VDCs in Jammu and Kashmir so that they are able to better counter a terrorist attack, officials said on Monday. The “final contours” of the training schedule, variety of arms to be included and number of participants will be decided in due course of time, they said. The Jammu and Kashmir administration has recently started reissuing weapons to village defence guards (VDGs), earlier known as village defence committees (VDCs), following the Dhangri incident in Rajouri district in which seven people were killed.
